Ded Server help... please

I set up a FFA server with room for 10 people and the following settings:

 

- Speed 200 (instead of the normal 250)

- Force regen time 150 (normal is 200 I think)

- Force mastery: Jedi Knight

- Frag limit 44

- Pure server

- All force powers on

- These weapons disabled:

------- Rocket launcher

------- Heavy repeater

------- DEMP gun

------- Flechette weapon

 

 

It was really enjoyable. The speed and the weapon setting was perfect for the type of gameplay I like. And without those weapons it seemed more Star Wars like

 

But I have a question.

 

This line

seta sv_master1 "masterjk2.ravensoft.com"

Announces my server so people can see it ingame or do I not have to set this for people to see my server in the game browser? The ping to my server is 200 something, but when I join it drops to 30-40. The server is on a shared internet connection (512Kb up). The high ping in the browser worries me as it might mean that people close to me won't connect Anything I can do to correct this? And people who join have normal pings... I have seen 50 - 175 pings on my server.

Does it consistently show up as 200 ping to you or does it fluctuate if you refresh it? Is your server still full? If so, then I wouldn't worry about it. If you tell us where your server is located and the ip address, I suppose a few of us could see how it looks to us.

Well I did some tests myself. On the Eye the ping is in the range of 30-70 like when I join. And the ping varies in the ingame browser, but I suspect that joining players creates a great deal og lag. I would like to just serve and play on the same machine instead of using the other server, but when I try this noone can see the server. Only when I set up a dedicated server can people find my server. Is there something I can do to get my non-dedicated server to show up in the ingame browser?

 

 

Perhaps this

seta sv_master1 "masterjk2.ravensoft.com"

can be entered in some file or something?

I believe you can make that happen by manually sending heartbeats to the master server. I'll have to test that out to be sure. If that's the case, it's possible to set a script up to do that for you. I have noticed, that depending on the number of players and the map, running a server and playing on the same machine tends to make for some lag. Obviously, that's a bit dependent on the hardware involved. ;)

The old machine I use as a server:

P3 800

384MB RAM

 

The newer machine

Athlon xp 1700

512MB RAM

 

I tried running the dedicated server on the newer machine while I also played on the same machine. There was no real slowdown or lag. I intend to only run smal (8 players)l FFA games as I find the 16 player games quite chaotic :)
