Odd behavior

I know, odd behavior out of the dedicated server - imagine that. :) Anyhow, the only time I've seen the dedicated server crash out(and it did this right before my eyes) was when it experienced behavior similar to what I'm about to paste from the server logs. Keep in mind when this first occurred I checked with the players immediately and none of them saw anything funny going on. An example entry:

192:41 ClientBegin: 1

192:41 setteam: 0 SPECTATOR SPECTATOR

192:41 ClientUserinfoChanged: 0 n\Shen Bai Lung\t\3\model\jeditrainer/default\g_redteam\Empire\g_blueteam\Rebellion\c1\2\c2\5\hc\100\w\0\l\0\tt\0\tl\0

Nothing unusual about this, except for the fact that as I watched the server scrolled through this same exact event faster than I could even watch, to the tune of taking up 40-50 PAGES of the server log in about 20-30 seconds. Players saw no untoward behavior from this person while this was going on and him/her disconnecting is finally what caused it to stop. Didn't crash this time... however, same thing occurred later in the day with 40-50 more pages scrolling by and this time the server errored out and shut itself down entirely. Has anyone else seen this?

Every time a player changes something about their model and some settings, a CUIC (ClientUserinfoChange) occurs. If they are scrolling through the various models and such trying to find one...it can be quite lengthly. I have seen in crash servers a few times when it's excessive. Do you have sv_floodProtect "1" set? I don't think it will specifically help in this case, but I'm curious. Do you actually get an error message or does it just stop? Remember, most crashes don't actually log the stderr (like opStack or Seg Fault) so you need to be looking at the console when it happens or have a special script (linux) to do the logging.

sv_floodprotect is indeed 1. That's the default.

As for the problem I posted about originally, I really, really doubt it's someone just scrolling through models, because like I said, there are sometimes 30-40 pages of the same event, and at 10-15 events per page... You see how crazy the math ends up. The server console literally flies through the messages so quickly it processes 15-20 of them a SECOND. The first time this occurred it stopped when the user dropped off the server, but the second time I watched it fly by until the server actually illegal opped or the equivalent(too quickly for me to see if there was a specific error message). Just checked the server logs for tonight and it happened again - pages and pages from a single user with at least 20-30 of these events a second. To put this into perspective, after I'd say approximately 3-4 full days of server operation with logging(from running dedicated and playing around locally with bots) the log file is 1,452 pages and already almost 9 megs. That's just insane.

On a related note, from both a player and an admin perspective, what the hell's the deal with these massive lag spikes? I've seen repeated occurrences(playing AND serving) where latency goes haywire for a few minutes, pings jump all the way to 999, and eventually everyone times out. Has anyone else noticed this with any frequency?

heh dont u know about the server crash script? its possible to crach a server within seconds. i wont post the script but its a simple binding. its a cycle thru different models. if u press the binded key just once, u get lag for some seconds. if u maliciously happen to hold the key presses the server will crash and take the clients down with him. that works with saber color too....
