I can't get LAN play to work

I bought the game so that I could play against my brother through our LAN, like we do with halflife, starcraft, quake 3, and many other games. However, I don't see any way to make a LAN game other than to make the computer a dedicated server (which I don't want to do b/c I need to play!). Did I suddenly go blind or something? I also tried making a dedicated server and the computer saw my brothers game but I couldn't join it. This is really driving me crazy and help will be greatly appreciated

I use LAN to play over my University's network and nothing is wrong at all, and you got to do nothing out of the ordinary to start up a game.

Just make sure the HOST leaves a few HUMAN slots so you can join and have the CLIENT switch the ticker on JOIN SERVER to LOCAL instead of INTERNET or whatever it might be. The game should show up, works for the University here.

As it should, because the university has a DHCP server that leases it an IP address for their local network. Many people are clueless as to what obtain Ip address using DHCP menas, but check it anyway.

Unless you have a DHCP server, and if you are not sure whether you do, chances are you don't, you need to assign any computers invovled with a LAN game a static IP address. What it is will not matter, I suggest using 111.11.11.1 then 111.11.11.2, etc.. for simplicity. And before someone telle me they have played with no IP address in the past, remember some games use IPX, but I guarentee you it has not happened with TCP/IP, heck UT freaks out if your IP address isn't similar on the LAN.

The other thing SOME people may need to do, especially XP and W2K users is install netbeui, why I will never understand, in my opinion its a useless protocol, but MS suggests doing this if your having trouble finding other machines in any programs, so........

I bought 2 copies of outcast and started to play . Game runs nice and smooth. Till we get "Connection interupted"

I have 2 systems connected by a single hub going to a cable modem. Both systems are windows ME. Both systems have the newest directx installed and all driver updates. Everytime about 5 minutes into the game either connection drops or we get a major slow down.

I have tried the local multiplayer and the internet version but both come back with the same error. One more thing , when i go back to re-enter the game it's no longer there. I know the game is still running because i see running on the computer next to mine. Also we have changed which computer was being the server, same issue there to. It seems like the server drops but the user playing on the server doesn't get any feed back to this.

Ok also, went threw and removed and old adapters which where no longer needed. Like old modems, ect. I can play other games fine .

So any feed back could be helpful.

Oh, our ip addresses are issued via our isp.

When I create a game there is no option for a LAN game, so how does my computer know I'm making a LAN game and not an internet game? In fact, b/c I'm sharing my internet connection with my brother we both can't see or join the same internet game. That's why LAN support is so important. When I make a starcraft or quake 3 game for example, I just select the button that says "LAN game" and I don't even need an internet connection. I only have 2 computers here, so I can't make one a dedicated server. I wouldn't have bough the game if it didn't say on the box that it supported LAN play.

Thats gonna be a problem with your ISP service, read the agreement, some don't support you hosting anything through them and put protections against such actions, its also posible the ISP just has problems and is not acceptable, but if it happns locally as well, I'd say either your hub/cables are bad or your drivers need to be updated for the NIC's.

AS to setting the data rate, go to join and you can set it, otherwise use the maxclient rate which allows you to limit the data a client can take, not useful in your situation.

Some of the other people having LAN trouble, if you use a dialup modem to connect to the internet, remember to set IE to NOT dial a defaul connection also, otherwise you may be sitting there while its dialing.

Are you having trouble PLAYING or HOSTING?

I though you could not HOST a game?

And its not absolutely your ISP, but that's a safe bet as they are a common source of similar problems. If you can't both go on line and join the same server then that may be something else, but a NEW dedicated server was released [again] 1.02c and that may help.

Ok i can host a game , my wife can join . We play for bout 5 minutes and then my wife gets connection interupted. Also we can join a third party server and randomly get the same error. Now we both have a purchased copy of the game cd in the cd rom drive. No mater which one of us is the server we get the same error.

This game could be great fun ..if it could run more than 5 minutes.

I have sent several emails about this to the developer.

Can anyone tell me if they check these boards?

littletotem, after the game crashes, pull down the console and scroll up a bit. You should see where the disconnection is and why. Post what it says here if you can't fix it from there. Also, if you have ICS enabled, disable it. See below.

lightsaber_37, to set up a LAN server, yes you both should have to have seperate IP addresses, but it's not really necessary as JK2 will use IPX if TCP/IP isn't available. JK2 is based on the Quake 3 Team Arena source and a lot of interface and networking things have been changed so don't expect it to act like basic Quake 3. Go to Play->Create Server and leave a few (or several) slots marked as HUMAN. Hit Begin. If your brother can't see you in the list, make sure he's looking at the Local list (Join->Source:Local). If he still can't see the game, try Add New Favorite and type in the server's IP address. He still may not see the game in the list, but might be able to connect. If you're still not able to play, disable ICS on both machines. In my experience, ICS royally screws up LAN games, so we make everybody at our events turn it off.

I play for not even a minute and it goes Connection Interrupted with the pretty little phone jack picture at the bottom and when I hold tab the scoreboard shows up and it shows my ping flucuating in the 40 - 100 range, but I can see fights going on around me, people moving, parts of the level moving (cars, etc.), I hear sounds like the guns, everything that is a part of the level that makes a sound, I can see text, I can type and people can see my text, it's just my guy basically freezes and runs in place. My friend made a game and I joined it, he said he saw my guy running in place, and it wasn't exactly lag, because I was talking to him on the phone at the time, he could read what I typed right after I pressed enter.

If anyone is still reading this thread and solved the problem... PLEASE HELP!!!

Comp Specs: P3 800 MHz 256 PC-133 RAM WinME GF2 GTS 32MB Cable Modem

And it's definitely not the internet cause my friend has cable, the one I joined the game w/.... so.... plz help...

When my brother makes the game I can see it, but when I try to join it all I get is a message saying "connecting to server". I left it on while I went to eat dinner, and it still was trying to connect 30 min later when I came back.

I am willing to try anything to get the game to work, but I don't know what "ICS" actually is, so I don't know how to disable it. I use intel anypoint sharing software, and it uses ISS (internet sharing software) to share internet connection, should I turn that off? What else should I do to get this to work?

lightsaber_37, ICS=Internet Connection Sharing and it will screw up your LAN games royally. I suspect the intel software you're using will do the same thing. Disable it at all costs. You should try joining your brother's game more than once. I've been stuck at that screen, checked the server, and found that I'd actually been disconnected, but my end didn't catch it. Also, can your brother see a game that you create?

littletotem, to get the console, hit Shift+~. To scroll up and down, use the PageUp and PageDown keys.

xXNUFANpunkXx, it sounds like your rate setting is waaaaaaaaay off. What kind of connection do you have? Bring down the console, type 'rate' and post what it is.

when I typed in rate this message was returned to me:

"rate" is:"4000" default:"4000"

But there's one message that seemed to stick out the most, I fear this may be the problem, but I don't know how to fix it...

Yes, yes, but can you both join a server online, not one you host?

Otr do you get connection interruted then also?
