MOD option in single player setup, what it all about?

It's building to the future...

Half-Life had this under the heading "Custom Game"

It's not something to use now, rather it's something that will alow you to switch between Mods from within the engine, on the fly, Once Mods are released.

This also should allow the addition of "Addon Packs" from Raven w/o having to dig into the code too deep on the original install.... Otherwise you run the risk of having the add-on nuke save games, or make you incompatable with non-add-on players

What many of the files that our out now are not actual mods as such. They are just replacing current files in the same game, not making any new game modes etc. If you know of QuakeRally, that is a mod, no just changing the graphics on a saber, or a skin.

Too many people have the definition of a "mod" spread out way too much. A mod is a modification to the gameplay itself, not simply any change made to the game, like a new level or player model or skins.

Day of Defeat, Team Fortress Classic, Counterstrike, these are all mods of Half-Life because they change the gameplay completely. A new player model for the singleplayer game isn't a mod, it's just a new player model. If somebody were to make a *shudder*JK2 version of Counterstrike*shudder*, then that would be a mod and would show up in the mod menu.
