Why the heck haven't Episodes 4-6 been released on DVD?

Word was that Lucas wanted to focus on Ep 2 and 3 before focusing on the DVD releases of the first trilogy. It sucks, but it's also the reason we don't have the Indiana Jones Trilogy on DVD as well, although it's rumored those will start coming out later this year and next year on DVD.

I'm lucky I suppose, I've got the definitive collection on Laserdisc so I can see the Original Triology, (not the re-releases) in THX and digital sound with commentary. But I'm one of the few.

I believe that Lucas will actually add to the original trillogy, much in the same way he did with SE. Some kind of super-de-duper edition or other nonsense like that. But I bet it's gonna be good - especially with his team's mastery of special effects.

Basically, he still thinks the original trillogy isn't complete. The boxed set for all six episodes will probably cost in the hundreds. But for the money, I can't wait to see what they do with the 'saber fight between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader. Better be something better than two old fogeys toying around. '-)

After the re-release of ROTJ Lucas annouced a venture to distribute the movies by demand via new satellite download. It was supposed to be a whole new technological multimedia break-thru. He was gonna distribute the three movies as part of that network.

Never came about, and then he got tied up in Episode One.

I think it was during his Biography interviews(im not sure here) that he said he wants to re-do the first three amnd then release all 6 to the public. Kinda like the way Coppola re-did the Godfather movies to make it more chronological. I guess blend all parts smoothly.

Yeah, same as the others have said, he is waiting until Ep 3 is out on DVD before releasing the OT on DVD. I think it is more to do with giving ILM and Skywalker Sound the time to devote to really getting them up to an acceptable quality to put onto DVD. At the moment they are stuck doing E2 and E3, which takes more than 2 years in post-production, ie doing all the CGI.

no doubt the original print will have to be really cleaned up so that it doesn't artefact on a DVD player, or shows the lack of quality in the equipment on a movie shot 25 years ago. From sources they have shot some new footage to put onthe OT DVD's, either as new scenes, or as filler footage to show some of the deleted scenes, or to fill in the animation on the DVD menu system.

The reason TPM came out on DVD so quickly was that it was originally shot on Digital Media, so it wouldn't be as hard to put it onto a DVD. As well as giving ILM to include the extra footage in the DVD realase, when compared to the original theatrical and video release.
