volumetric shadows

who here runs volumetric shadows?

 

amd 1.3

512mb

geforce 3 - 28.32 drivers

 

the game runs reasonably well at 1024 x 32 with full detail on bilinear and 16-bit textures, the fps stays above 50 even in the most complex rooms with several npcs

 

the usual fps is 100-150, but if i turn the volumetrics on, this falls to about 60-70 fps and will go down to 20-30 fps if in a area with more than 3 npcs

 

i know most ppl turn them off, but i like the shadows and am wondering if everyone is getting as big a performance hit with them on as i am

they seem to immediately halve the performance

 

 

edit: looking at another thread i noticed the command cg_shadows 3, this seems to be a 3rd mode of shadows that raven omitted from the menu, the shadows cast are solid black and are not stretched by diff light sources, consequently they look crap but interestingly do not slow my computer down at all

what is it with the volumetrics that is so HW intensive?

I've got almost the same setup as you and I run at 1024x768, 32 bit everything, pretty much balls-out detail, and it's very smooth. Raven also commented about the driver level you're using. Apparently, nVidia made a few tweaks to it that screwed up a lot more than it sped up. Raven only tested up to 2.3.1.1. Time to drop the driver level back a few.
