StormHammer
I'd start with Timothy Zahn's Heir To The Empire trilogy, which really kick-started the EU in recent times. There are older books, like the original Han Solo and Lando Calrissian stories...along with Splinter Of The Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster, alongside the actual movie novelisations...which are an interesting read in their own right, especially the original Star Wars...because it includes some material not seen in the movie. Return of the Jedi also has a seen cut from the movie (where Luke builds a new lightsaber - I'm sure I saw a small snippet on initial release that showed someone's hands putting a lightsaber together, but I never saw i after that - perhaps I'm just going mad ). If you really like the Dark Forces series of games, you might be interested in the illustrated novellas by William C. Dietz...Soldier For the Empire, Rebel Agent and Jedi Knight. Shadows of the Empire is set between ESB and ROTJ, so you might want to check that out as well. Personally, I enjoyed reading most of the X-Wing series by Michael A. Stackpole - which introduces Corran Horn, and recounts the adventures of Rogue Squadron. Very good read, most of them. Hope that helps. Oh...and welcome to the forums.
