Milkshape... newbie... now what?

Recommended Posts

I downloaded milkshape and threw this together, but I don't know quite what it is that I made, nor what it is good for... Anyone know what to do now?

I don't know if anyone can even see this image. Let me know... It's called an .ms3d file.

Help?

Dood if you cant upload a picture, please dont start editing models, and a .ms3d is not a picture file. You gotta learn very basic stuff like this before attempting editing 3d models. Do you even know how to make a PAK (pk3) file?

I already knew that it wasn't a picture file.

My resume has a whole page of protocals and programs that I'm certified in.

I took a desktop shot of the window and cropped it in photoshop.

I had assumed that one of the buttons on the post reply window would allow me to upload it to the lucasforums site.

And... I've only completed two skins and don't think myself much of an editor, but advising people not to edit because YOU have an incomplete picture of their IQ is rather... impolite.

Let me restate my previous question:

What do I do with a .ms3d file? What's my next step?

Everybody's gotta start somewhere. I know some amazing 3d artists who don't know a thing about web design... they think that Internet Explorer magically reads other peoples' computers, or something.

sights0d... you'll need to take a screenshot of your desktop with Milkshape open, save that as a .JPEG file, and then upload that to a website.

First, take a screenshot: It's really easy. Next to your scroll lock should be a button that says PrntScrn, or something similar. Make sure you've got Milkshape pulled up, then hit that button.

You've just copied an image of your screen to your clipboard. Now open up your favorite art type program (hell, use Paint! :)), and hit Ctrl-V. This will paste the image into the program. Up to file, save as, then make sure you save it as a .jpg file (for size). JPEG compression is higher than most, so it won't be as much of a pain in the hiney to view. :) There! A screenshot of Milkshape!

Telling someone how to upload it to the web is a bit harder. Post back here once you've got your desktop saved as a jpg file.

D'oh. That's what happens when you go for coffee and a smoke and don't hit refresh. :)

Your .ms3d file won't work in the JKII engine. You have to export it to something that you can mesh with the _humanoid.gla file (to insert all the animations) and come up with a .glm file (if you're trying to create a character model).

Bloodriot seems to have figured out what a couple of tools do to create a .glm file. Try exporting your model (in milkshape) to XSI format, then following his instructions on the thread http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=489027#post489027.

And see if you can get it to work, I'm all ears. :)

lol.

timing is everything, they say. Heh.

Got a geocities or a tripod site? You could make an HTML page with the pic inside it and link to that, I believe. Or just change the file extension to .txt, does that still work?

Actually, I've already got a jpeg file of it. The .jpg file is what I tried to post last night.

I'd like to thank ethanbv for actually offering help instead of jumping on my butt.

And... UserEX... I'd like you to note that the other day I remember someone pulling the same thing on you (jumping on a supposed ignorance) so I'm just guessing that you are "paying that forward."

Aside from that... there is a way to graft it (I think) in Milk... but I'll have to check on it. I think I might have found a way while I was tinkering last night.

And... Incidentally, I've been on the web since... 95? (Actually, I had something close to the internet through prodigy back in the early early nineties...) And I have my own webpage at work that I threw together myself. Not too shabby of one if I do say so myself.

I guess the bottom line is that we'd get more cool models, maps, skins, and stuff if we were more like ethanbv than telling people not to try.
