You might try the launch feature in ASE. I'm not certain, but I could swear I remember some people using that and having their server show up in the list even though it wasn't dedicated. You can manually send heartbeats to the master server, but I've never tried it using just the multiplayer game rather than the ded server.

ASE is a game brower and launcher. You can find it here. It is trialware and you need to register if you keep using it after a period of time. Personally, I like the browser too. There is a command to send manual heartbeats, but I'm not sure if it works with non-dedicated servers. The command is /heartbeat You can try and see if it works for you.

him i didnt see a function in ASE that allows me to start a server and join it.. when i choose start server it just starts the mp game

(main menu) and i didnt find anything else

as for the heartbeats... well the command DID work.. but nothing changed when the heartbed was sent...

well IF the heartbeat was sent.. i'm not sure cuz when you execute the command nothing appears in the console.. the game accepts the command but does nothing....

so i'm still lookin for a way.....

Well, I wasn't sure if the manual heartbeat would work within a non-dedicated server. I do believe that the best solution is to use a dedicated server if you want public players. Frequently, people want to host a server so they and their friends can join, If that's the case, then the friends can be given an ip to connect to and the heartbeat issue is moot. If you want to host a game and have public players join by hosting in a non-dedicated manner, it implies that you're going to shutdown your computer or at least the game when you finish playing and all the public players will be kicked out. Otherwise, you intend to leave you computer running JK2 24/7 with you connected as a player/spectator.

What I'm getting at is that it seems that a lot of people want to "host a server" and have it listed with the dedicated servers when they really aren't providing a dedicated server. If you want to play with friends, that's fine--host a non-dedicated server and have them join by ip. If you want to "be in control" of the server you play on for a while and have public players come and play but will shut it down when you don't want to play anymore, I guess I just don't understand that and I believe the reason the hosting process works the way it does is because the creators of the game think similarly to the way I do.

Yes, there are lots of situations where a dedicated server setup isn't quite working right and the admin needs advice on how to get it straighted out so it's listed on the master server. I can't think of many situations where that issue is related to the use of the multiplayer application to both host and play a game. I understand that there is an issue with joining a dedicated server on the same LAN and having a lot of lag. I'm sorry that that bug exists, but I can't fix it. The workaround of trying to get a non-dedicated server to ACT like a dedicated one is quite a trial with which I sympathize. However, until the server/lan issue is fixed by Raven, I'm going to withdraw from trying to work around it. I gave it a shot, but feel too much like I did trying to get force power disabling to work.
