Aerys
I'm having a problem that just seems to have started the past few days. When maps rotate, many player suddenly show 999 ping and eventually timeout (I have it set to 120 sec). I've heard rumors of this problem before on here, but was wondering if anyone else has experienced it that's found a definitive answer.
MatrixCPA
Are you using any custom maps? You are referring to sv_timeout being 120, right?
Leo
That's the reason I quit serving this game. At SOF2 mp demo hardly anyone ever timeout. It's a problem of net code.
MatrixCPA
Well, I think it could easily be map or setting issue. I vary rarely have clients timeout, but I don't use custom maps (no custom ctf maps yet) and I have a very forgiving config for timeouts.
worm777
On my duel server it seems that it happens to the same people a lot and to the others not at all.
DeathsHead
yeah, my custom map duel server does the same damn thing. No idea why. I guess I am gonna have to turn off autodownload.
MatrixCPA
Well, if you run custom maps...you're going to lose some players. Even if you have sv_allowDownload on, most clients have it off by default. Plus, because the download rate is limited to the maxrate, it can take a while to download a map and many players won't wait.
Aerys
I have been testing both with and without the new maps/skins. The results are the same. I do not allow downloading (that would be silly I see others are having this problem so I'm going to assume there's no definitive answers on it yet. MatrixCPA
Off hand, I wouldn't expect a definitive answer any time soon. There hasn't been one client-side patch yet, so it's not possible that they've changed the netcode behavior in any meaningful way. This was and still is a problem with RtCW servers as well (also Q3 based).
Aerys
Thanks once again for your informative replies. I was mainly concerned because at the time ALL the clients were ALWAYS timing out at map change, but that only seemed to go on for one day. Its not so bad now, perhaps because its not so unexpected. You're a good guy for sharing your vast insight on these types of technical issues.
MatrixCPA
99% of it was passed on to me by others just as I'm doing now. My purpose is to help the JK2 community as those before me have helped other game communities.
Jedi_Jack
this problem is happening on our server about 80% of the time when i get on. once i was actually able to hang in there and saw half the players had 999 ping until they all timed out...anyone know why this is happening? MatrixCPA
As I mentioned, the very first thing to do is make sure you have sv_timeout set to something reasonable. I recommend at least 90--I use 120 myself. After that, remember that using custom maps means you're going to lose some players because they don't have the map. If you still have a problem, throw your server.cfg (or whatever you use in it's place) up and I'll take a look at it. The last thing to consider is your net connection. If you are seriously exceeding your upstream bandwidth, players are going to lag out. Not every connection is sufficient to run a server.
Falryx
I've also been running into this more recently than not -- it is timed around the time I've brought in custom maps and skins into the base directory of my JK2 server. From the server side, the map switches and you see a bunch of clients "time out". From the client side, your box just hangs. I've had this happen a few times to me client side (on my own server no less) and my only recourse has been to reboot my box. This makes me figure there's some wierd client-server interaction which sends the client into a "horked" state. But that's just a best guess. Again, I didn't hit this problem regularly until I started bringing in custom items into my base directory. At this stage, I like the custom items, so I'm not liable to back out just yet. If it gets intolerable, my player base will lemme know and we'll back out to the standard install and see what gives. In the mean time, I've raised my sv_timeout somewhat to see if that will help.
