JediGhost[SITH]
If your server is not showing up on the list: From the main menu of JK2MP, go to the console. Type: "seta net_port <28070-????>" Example: "seta net_port 28073" and "seta port <same port u put for net_port>" Restart the MP, go to the console and type net_port. Make sure the port is what you entered before. Now start your server. Check the list and it should appear. I have NO idea the range of server possibilites (28070 thru 28079 maybe?) but if your server ISNT showing up, its because the port your using is full.. Also your port will become 1 above the one your server is using EX: Server is using port 28074, you'll be 28075.. If the ports go that high, I don't know. MatrixCPA
The server defaults to trying to use ports 28070 to 28080.
JediGhost[SITH]
I betcha 28080 gets good lag or maybe 28078 or some random number in between.. Oh, anyway, does any1 know if the ports cause different pings/lag? some better than others? I'm hoping not..
MatrixCPA
What port the server is using in this case has no impact on lag.
JediGhost[SITH]
Well the game default is 28070.. The other ports (less used ones?) may have ****ty lag because the Master server, or whomever, is not putting enough effort into the port because no one uses it.. Or maybe they ALL have the same pings, but when more people use a port it lags more, therefore, the unused ports have good lag. ............
KandyFLip
I'm using 28090 on one of my servers.... seems OK
geronimo27
I use port 28090 and 28095 because using the defualt ports for some reason caused my servers to not show in the in-game server finder. No increase in lag that I can see. I'm not sure why different ports would cause lag? I have run servers for many years, and have never heard or seen this happen before. The master server is only there to tell the game client what servers are up and running. Once you connect to the server, you no longer go through the master server. This is not some crap like ubisoft, so a game server/client do not depend on the master server for the game iteself.
JediGhost[SITH]
Well obviously the ports have some relationship with the Master server. If you use the default port (28070), your server hardly ever shows up.. Because sooooo many servers are using 28070. But if you use a random number, like 28086, your port will show because not many servers use it. Also I didn't say un-used ports will lag, I was asking if they lag. Judging from the response, they don't. And I was wondering if you can pick ANY random number (5-digit only?) like 56847...? or 58364 or 31746 or 89493 ..you get the idea. (If not, I'm guessing the ports range from 28070 to 28099?)
MatrixCPA
Ultimately, you can use any port number that isn't already being used for something else. It doesn't need to be inside the default range that the server wants to use. They design the server to try to utilize a specific range of ports "set aside" for that game so that a collision is less likely to happen. In the end, port numbers are just a convenient way for traffic to get routed to the right application/service running on a box.
