Zephyr77
Hello, Ok, all I want to do is play Outcast with several friends over the internet. We currently play Mysteries of the Sith and it's so easy to get online. Get the IP from the host and your playing. Being able to play Outcast over the internet seems difficult. Is there a step by step document somewhere that explains how to do this? How to set up the server, how to join the server, etc. I've been reading posts here and still don't understand how to make this work. Must be because it's late and I'm beginning to get really frustrated with this. I'm using a cable modem so I'm trying to host the game. I also have a Linksys 4-port cable/DSL router. I found a post on how to set up the router but it seems so complicated to get a game going compared to MoTS. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Zeph
JediGhost[SITH]
First of all, you must do the following to enable the ability of friends joining your server: Step #1: Create a server on JK2 and check your IP# and find your port. it'll probably say "Connecting to 192.168.1.100:28070." 28070 is the normal port for JK2. Step #2: Open an internet browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. It should pop up with a sign in window for linksys. Type in your username and password, and if you did NOT SET a user name and password, leave the name blank and type in ADMIN as the password. Step #3: After accessing your linksys settings on your broswer, click the advanced tab. From there, click the forwarding tab. Step #4: Where it says "Sevice Port Range" type in your JK2 port 1 time in both boxes. EXAMPLE: 28070, and in box 2, type 28070. Step #5: Make sure your protocal is set to Both. Step #6: under IP Address it should have written "192.168.1.". Write in your computer's 100 number in the space provided. If you do not know it, click START, click RUN, and type WINIPCFG, then select Linksys and it will show your full IP#. EXAMPLE: My computer's IP is 192.168.1.102, so I put 102 in the space provided next to the incomplete IP. Step #7: Now just hit apply, restart your computers, including ALL computers using your Linksys. Step #8: Load WINIPCFG, select Linksys, hit "release" and then "renew". Repeat for ALL computers using the Linksys. Step #9: load your internet browser and make sure your internet is still working on all computers. Step #10: If it still works, load JK2. Create your server, and check the main list of servers. If your server appears, you've done it successfully and people can now connect. If your server DOES NOT appear, this can mean 1 of 2 things: 1. You made a mistake and did not fix your firewall 2. You DID fix it, and it IS working, but your server is just not showing up on the games list. Once you do that, click Create Server and set all your options. Then just give your friend your IP# (you can find it by looking at the big list of game servers, finding your server, and getting the server info, it'll be written there) Tell your friend to add the IP to the Favorites list and then just connect to the server.. Zephyr77
Thanks for the help! I followed your instructions but still can't see my server in the list using another computer on the network. The server shows up if I select local as the source but I don't see it in the list for the internet. Couple of questions: I'm using Windows XP Pro so the WINIPCFG command is not available to check the IP Address. I'm pretty certain I know what the IP is by checking the network connection info. Would this be the way to do this? Is there something similar to WINIPCFG in XP that I should be using? When creating a host, I don't see an option to setup a local server or an internet server. I assume this doesn't matter? If my server still doesn't show in the internet source list, how do I go about troubleshooting this? Thanks again for your help! Zephyr77
OK, I did verify the correct IP address by reviewing the network connection info in WinXP. FYI for those who may not know how to do this in XP (I didn't)... Click My Network Places Right click Local Area Connection Select Status on the pop up menu Click the support tab The IP Address is listed here. I now have the router configured to forward port 28070 to the IP address I verified. I looked in the JKII Console and it is indeed using port 28070. I create the server but still can't find it in the internet source list when I join a server using another machine. I'm stumped.... Zeph
JediGhost[SITH]
If 28070, try changing your ports. I use 28072, you can use any from 28070 to 28999?!? From your JK2 console type: "seta net_port <28070 - 28999>" example: seta net_port 28073 then type "seta port <same port you put as net_port" example: seta port 28073 Now quit JK2, go back into your linksys settings. You must change the Forwarding port to the new one you entered. Originally you probably forwarded 28070 and 28070? Now make it your new port. Go into WINIPCFG, select Linksys, release and renew, reboot, start JK2, go to the console and type net_port and it should say your new port. Then just create your server, and see if its on the list. If it isnt then you did something wrong along the way (Changing ports on JK2, or the port forwarding)
MatrixCPA
Have you tried letting your friends join by ip like he originally put in his instructions? Just because the server isn't in the in-game listing doesn't mean people can't connect to it. It might be a good idea to verify that the server is working properly that way before moving on to other issues.
Zephyr77
I did have them enter the IP address into their favorites but they still can't get into the server I've set up. I went into the console and and tried to change the port from 28070 to 28072 (and several others) following your instructions exactly JediGhost. It says the port changes will take effect when restarted. I then exit JK2 and change the settings in the Linksys settings for port forwarding to 28072.... Since I'm running WinXP, the WINIPCFG applet is not available, so I can't release and renew. The only thing I can find that's even close is "repair" in the support tab of the Local Area Connection. There is no list to pick Linksys from. I reboot the system but when I start JK2 and enter net_port it still shows the original port of 28070. This is really pissin' me off! What a PITA... MatrixCPA
I prefer to put the port in the command line like so: +set net_port 2807x Just make sure that there isn't a net_port setting in the jk2mpconfig.cfg that's conflicting with it. If there is one, just delete it. Make sure there isn't one in any of the other configs you load.
JediGhost[SITH]
If your friend is joining by typing in your IP on the favorites, port doesnt matter. Obviously if he tried to join and could not, you have problems with your Forwarding still.

Zephyr77
Open a DOS prompt, type ipconfig /all to display information about all your NIC's, typing ipconfig /help displays all other commands. Thanks! I was finally able to change the port JK2 uses to 28072 (I've tried others as well) and made the changes in the Linksys setup for port forwarding entering the ports I changed within JK2 console. The server still doesn't show up on the internet list and friends still cannot join by entering the IP address in favorites. I did notice in the Linksys manual that if you use port forwarding DHCP must be disabled. I tried this but then couldn't get connected to the internet using my cable modem. In addition, I couldn't access the other 2 computers on the network. What a pain it was getting that fixed! Just for kicks, I created a server with Mysteries of the Sith and guess what, friends were able to connect with no problems! If only JK2 was that simple. Oh well, it's not worth the hassle. It really does tick me off though becasue Multiplayer was the main reason I spent the money on the game. Thanks for all of you advice. TheAphextwin
I have setup many servers behind my LAN, I have an 8-port Linksys and it is simple to configure. 1. Log in to the router, typically 192.168.1.1 goto setup, advanced, forwarding 2. Add the port to both ranges and local ip of the game server and click apply I have DCHP enabled. Thats it. Otherwise the game would have to perform a port scan just to figure out what port the server is using and then what would happen with someone running 2 servers on the same box? If you don't put in a port, then it's going to assume the default port of 28070.
Zephyr77
I have setup many servers behind my LAN, I have an 8-port Linksys and it is simple to configure.... Well, at least it seems that DHCP doesn't have to be turned off. Odd that Linksys would put that in the manual:confused: I thought it would be simple... I've spent the better of 4 day's trying to get this to work (different ports, port forwarding to the new one's, etc.) and have not been able to get friends to connect as of yet. Thinking it might have something to do with the Linksys router, I borrowed a D-Link DI-704, configured it, and it still won't work To quote myself: Oh well, it's not worth the hassle. Probably not... but now it's personal Zeph
