Graham_uk
The England football squad was announced today. Here is the final list of "Sven's Men" Goalkeepers: David Seaman Nigel Martyn David James Defenders: Danny Mills Wes Brown Sol Campbell Rio Ferdinand Gareth Southgate Martin Keown Ashley Cole Wayne Bridge Midfielders: David Beckham Owen Hargreaves Nicky Butt Steven Gerrard Paul Scholes Kieron Dyer Joe Cole Strikers: Michael Owen Darius Vassell Emile Heskey Teddy Sheringham Robbie Fowler My thoughts... I think the goal keepers are pretty rudimentry, though I am not sure about the inclusion of David James, I have never been convinced at his ability to handle crosses We are we taking 8 defenders!!?! Espically, one such as Wes Brown, who has made far too many mistakes this year to warrant a place. I think Southgate will be okay (as long as he dont miss any more penalitys for England). Keown is an interesting cohice, as he is old, dunno if he can cope with the conditions out there I heard it mentioned on the radio that 4 of the midfielders choosen have been injury prone this year. Lets hope they cope! Fantastic to see Joe Cole in the squad, lets hope he can do in the World Cup for England what he has done for us in friendly games I relaly am not sure about our strikers, Vassell, Hesky...well, im not conivnced. Sheringham has the experience but does he have the legs? Hopefully the strikers will be Fowler with Own, with Gerrad making some probing runs and supproting the attack. I think that wil lbe quite potent. I think England will get to the Semi's. Although, thats a tough call, espically as it is likely we will meet France in the quater finals. Wicket the Ewok
David James used to be very bad a crosses and kept missing the ball. The reason? He used to play too many computer games and it ruined his preiforal (sp?) vision. You'll be glad to know he's now been banned from playing games. Wicket the Ewok
This hasn't got anything to do with Star Wars but since this forums is "anything goes" it doesn't matter.

Micozade
I agree about wes brown i think his performances and the own goals hes let in he shouldnt be coming , a fit tony adamsshould have been included . sol and rio will form the defensive nucleus with keown for support. Teddy sheringham dosent need the legs he is such a tactical genius thats gotta be worth a couple of yards in any bodys game . Wouldnt have taken robbie fowler been out of sorts lately we should have got shearer back one last time instead if not matt jansen. I think the midfield is pretty sound . If we get past the first round we could go the distance there are not that many good teams this year eg brazil not as good as usual germany,s a spent force rep of ireland will do well but france should be favourites. LooNBB
Prediction: England finally accepts that they are NOT a football giant after losses to Argentina, Nigeria, and Sweden in the first round. You guys don't have a chance. ~Vamos Argentina~
Graham_uk
Muc, I hope we can avoid france, but to do that I think we got to finish top of our group..i cud be wrong thou. I agree about the older players, like sheringham being solid, i just hope they can cope out there...i have been there and it is hard enough walking around! I think this is gonna be the making of severa;l england players. Loo, i think we are something like 11 in world at the moment, so hardly a footballing minnow, either! Divine Spirit
you forgot the main man: Sven!! despite the fact he's swedish and i think that takes away the point of having an 'English' team he is doing wonders for england this year!
BCanr2d2
When is England going to stop being pigheaded and finally actually change the way they field teams with FIFA, and send UK teams? Not until then will they really stand a chance of winning the World Cup in ANY sport. Is it the United Kingdom in name only and nothing else? When it comes to a game they invented and are bad at, they don't want to join with Wales and Scotland to field a UK team, and I guess that the same goes for those two as well. That's like New Zealand trying to qualify as North Island and South Island seperately for the Rugby Union world cup. Although they could both be successful to some level as seperate teams, a lot better as one. Never really understood the supposed United Kingdom that is so seperate in many ways. And still don't understand politically how all these countries work, or if there is really a UK, or if it is really 3 countries on the one island. Then again I don't understand how the ceiling in Heathrow Terminal 3 is so low when heading towards customs. Are they expecting midgets to fly in? Divine Spirit
I think the reason why a lot of you people say England is going to do bad is because you simply do not like England...ive noticed a lot of people from all over the world disliking England and it is hard to think of a reason why that is. the only feasable reason why they do is because at some point in history we beat then in a war or battle and throughout the generations people have kept their hatred for this country, i cant think of another reason why someone would hate England i can understand how you want your own team to win but when for example Equal Opposites put England at the bottom of his/her table predictions i think that is just a sign of how people dont regard England as being as good as they are...admittedly they are in a hard group but they can beat sweden and nigeria and how can you actually THINK England wont play well after how successful theyve been lately. you should see how many games theyve won recently....even beating germany - after years and years of losing - by 5 goals to 1!! Graham_uk
I think everyone in England will remeber that victory over Germany (which, was in teh high pressure situation of qualifying for the World Cup) for many years. England are something like 11 in the fifa ranking list, the highest we have been for many years. BCanr2d2, I take your point on board about the UK not having a 'united' team, but over here, many people are against that idea. Idividually, amoungst the home countries (England, Wales, Scotland, N Ireland) most people want individual national teams - a UK team would not be popular, so in effect, we do what, as a group of peoples feel appropiate, in fielding invidual teams. As long as FIFA accept it, we are not breaking any rules. I consider the UK to be very fortunate. We share the term 'United Kingddom' with the other home countries, and to that degreee we are one people. But we are also individual countries, under that term. Speak to differnt people in the UK and we wil lal lhave different veiws on that, but I consider myself English, and not British...some wil lsay otherwise.
