Daga
Hey All, I'm just looking for some examples of the MaxRate that you are using for your servers. I realize that the 'ideal' MaxRate is determined by your upstream bandwidth and the number of players but I need a point of reference. I'm getting a DSL line with a 384 upstream and I'd like to at least host 2 player duel matches. I'd really like to be able to host 6 player duel matches, but I'm not sure what the ping rates will be like. I have figured out the following table based on a 384 kbps upstream. Can someone give me feedback as to what the ping rate would probably be like based on the chart below? I'm thinking that a 2-4 person server would run like silk, but I'm not sure what the ping rates would be like that beyond 4 people. Thanks! - Daga 384kbps = 48Kps = 48000 #Players MaxRate Per Player ------------ ------------------------- 1 48000 2 24000 3 16000 4 12000 5 9600 6 8000 7 6857 8 6000 9 5333 10 4800 11 4363 12 4000
TySoft
I admin "Cheater's Wayside CTF" which is on an OC48 with a 16-24 player max depending on map... 9500 seems to be a good value for that server. However on your connection I'm guessing that ~7000 would be ideal, I'd think that 7000 would provide decent pings and scale up to 6-8 people on a 384k dsl... geronimo27
I run a 20 player CTF server over 1.2meg up/down DSL, and it seems to work great. If you only have 384 up though, you would probably want to keep your rate in the 7000 - 8000 range. Maybe even lower.
Daga
Thanks TySoft! I'll try it out as soon as I get my DSL. I'm actually thinking about upgrading my dsl service to the 1.5/1.5 Gamer's plan through speakeasy.net in August if I like their service. I'd like to start hosting various games and mods with good pings for around 16-20 people in the future. I've even kicked around the idea of putting up a website which shows the times throughout the day when I would be hosting particular games; with voting being a possibility as well. That way no one would have to guess and if I included various categories; e.g. RTS, FPS1, User's Choice, Obscure Mod, etc... that way I could help out as many different types of gamer's. Anyways, I'll quit rambling. Thanks! - Daga
MatrixCPA
My 16 player CTF server roughly utilizes 70k/sec upstream using an sv_maxrate of 7000.
seether7
i run a dedicated server sometimes on my adsl connection with 256kbit/sec upstream. I have the max players as 6. What would you recommend I have the maxrate set as? I was thinkin about 7000. Also do you think 6 players max is the max i could handle on my connection or do you think i could take more, or do you think i should have not even 6 as the max. Jasco Smlee
Just came across this article that may be of interest to people wondering about maxrate settings: http://www.planetquake.com/rocketland/haqsau/serversetup.shtml Basically it says: (no. of players) x (maxrate) < available bandwidth seether7, I too have 256kbps ADSL. I have mine set up with maxrate 5000 & maxplayers 7 - though 3 of these are reserved slots and one is always me across my LAN. So if you set your maxrate at 5000 you should be able to comfortably host 6 players.
MightyPez
I have a 640k down/ 128k up. My 8 person server has a maxrate of about 3000 with no probs.
tubesock
I've run my q3 servers at 30,000 for 2 years, so I just kept it the same for the jk2 servers. The cable modem/broadband users seem to like it when they have a rate of 25,000 themselves. -Tube
