btn
Hi all, I recently finished the SP version of JK2, hoping it would give me a better grasp on what to do in Multiplayer. Needless to say, it has not helped much, I am getting spanked left and right. I have joined a few servers (all running 1.03 if that matters) and I get killed so quickly its not even funny. I know there are some really good players out there, I have been death matching since Doom 1 (D2, Q1, Q2, Counter Strike)...but none of those games had anything like the Light Saber. Heh, chainsaw anyone? Sometimes it seems like all I am doing is running at people clicking the attack button like a fool, hoping to get a swipe in. Obviously its not working =) I have a few questions: - is there a way to avoid getting knocked down so often? I spend more time eating dirt than on my feet. There *must* be a way to avoid it, someone here posted "you get knocked down you deserve to die. If this guy can manage to knock you on the floor then there's no reason why he shouldn't kill you in one hit" Which begs the question "Ok, how do I avoid getting knocked down?" - What does DFA mean? - Which force powers are worth using and getting proficient at? I see a lot of pushing going on, and lightning. I cant imagine heal works fast enough to be of any use... - Where can I find decent servers with good players that are not jerks? I dont mind getting beat, but I like the oppourtunity to learn from it and not just get laughed off! Any information appreciated!
fitzwilliamd
Here are a few quick answers. There are some really good players frequenting these forums that will offer tips, guides, and useful rants to help hone your skills. If you plan on using the 1.03 patched version of the game, the best way to become skilled is to run up to Walmart and buy a long, pink, wiffle bat. Then wale on your car with it; the damage to swing ratio is almost identical Sometimes it seems like all I am doing is running at people clicking the attack button like a fool, hoping to get a swipe in. Many strategies can be employed to get an opponent open, but when you create a situation that yields a clear, unobstructed shot, your opponent should be penalized for your skillful use of space or tactics. This is not always the case with our patched version of JK2. The code needs some tweaking, but I digress, ultimately, you will learn what is effective in saber combat. - is there a way to avoid getting knocked down so often? There are many counters to this type of attack. The easy solution is to use absorb to prevent being tripped and, in a pinch, when tossed on your back, activate protect. Kick is also a nice reprisal--or Kick/Protect - What does DFA mean? ‘Death from Above’—it is a strong stance move that was nerfed in the recent patch. - Where can I find decent servers with good players that are not jerks? Use something like Qtracker to find servers that match your criteria using filters. Start going to servers with the best ping and you will be able to narrow down to your favorites. Add fun and helpful players to the PlayerWatch service in the program. Just plain mean and stupid people abound on the servers, so ignore them and make a list of quality players. I dont mind getting beat, but I like the oppourtunity to learn from it and not just get laughed off! One possible solution: take the default name, ‘Padawan’ or make up a generic name and use it until you learn. Then you can ignore obnoxious, foolish comments until you are proficient. Then it is time to permanently name yourself and start eating the jerks for lunch Muhahahah I wish you well!
Tarus
Now for a 1.03 pro response - is there a way to avoid getting knocked down so often? I spend more time eating dirt than on my feet. There *must* be a way to avoid it, someone here posted "you get knocked down you deserve to die. If this guy can manage to knock you on the floor then there's no reason why he shouldn't kill you in one hit" Which begs the question "Ok, how do I avoid getting knocked down?" People can kick you over by running into you and double tapping jump just as you can kick them. This deals damage and has a chance to knock them over. You need rank 2 jump. To avoid this simply kick them before they kick you or move out of the way. If your getting knocked down due to force then be sure you have 3 ranks in pull and push. While stnading still and not attacking its almost impossible for someone to use force push or pull to move you. - What does DFA mean? As mentioned about its death from above. Its a heavy stance overswing that was very powerful. It was not nerfed in 1.03 but fixed. In the old version you could do the over hand swing and while siting on the ground "recovering" you could spin in a circle. To make matters worse if anyone got near you and touched your saber it killed them. The fix makes it so right before and after the attack it does less damage, and you can no longer spin. - Which force powers are worth using and getting proficient at? I see a lot of pushing going on, and lightning. I cant imagine heal works fast enough to be of any use... Im usually on duel servers and the ones I play have most force disabled so I really can't help you here. - Where can I find decent servers with good players that are not jerks? I dont mind getting beat, but I like the oppourtunity to learn from it and not just get laughed off! If you like duel servers world worms NF is a great one. He gives ya rank 3 jump so you can still preform kicks, wall walks, etc but all other force is disabled. Really though you just have to find some that work for you, when you find a good server then favorite it.

DOH! *smacks head* Cant believe I didnt figure this one out, think I had to ask when I played MW 4 too ! Use something like Qtracker to find servers that match your criteria using filters. Kind of like using "unamed" or "player" in the old days =) Thanks for the suggestions, hope they dont stop here; Keep 'em coming, guys!
fitzwilliamd
Ah, is this a non-annoying version of Gamespy? Where might I find this? http://www.qtracker.com/ The program is not particularly elegant; but the Playerwatch feature is nice. ASE is another that you might check out. It has a buddy list system. http://www.udpsoft.com/eye/
tempest8008
Ah...fresh meat. No, wait (Helpful, Tempest, you're trying to be HELPFUL)... Okay. Getting pushed/pulled/kicked to the floor sucks, but here are some tips. Keep your Force pool high (above half) and you'll automatically prevent Force Push and Pull. However, when you're doing stuff (attacking, jumping, moving, using the Force) you become more susceptible. Facing your attacker, not attacking yourself, and keeping a decent Force pool will prevent those kind of attacks from working (except for kick, which is a physical attack itself). You'll be susceptible to Force Pushing and Pulling unless you've put points in those categories yourself. Get yourself up to Lvl3 in each of these and you'll be fully immune to those attacks as long as you follow the above guidelines. As to your 'saber skills... Create your own server and play around with the various stances. Watch how you move and how the different swings work. Practice moves like the light lunge (crouch, then hit forward+attack in light (blue) stance). Practice the DFA (press and hold attack, mid to late swing hit forward+jump). Spawn a bot and get him behind you, practice the medium and heavy backswings (face away from your opponent, hit back+attack, and you'll spin 360 and give a hard chop right behind you), and the light backstab (same keys, but you stop and stab backwards instead). DON'T rely on the above moves, they are special moves that do a lot of damage, but leave you open for counter-attack. Go through the stances yourself, see how you move, and watch for those stances in the game. Remember: Heavy stance = big, long, slow swings that cause a LOT of damage. Medium stance = mostly horizontal attacks, fast chops, a couple of quick downward hacks. Light stance = lots of quick flicking hits, easily blocked, but watch for the backstab and the lunge. Try to attack when the other is exposed. Don't get too close to the back of another player, as the backstab/slash has become a LOT more prevalent since the patch. Use saber throw in those situations instead, or the DFA if they are completely unaware. (DFA=Death From Above). USE THE FORCE. When someone ELSE is jumping around or attacking, spinning, rolling, wall-walking, use Force Push or Pull to get them where you want them, or push them off ledges or dropoffs. If you are a light sider, make sure to put points in Absorb, and bind it to something you can turn on quickly, this will protect you from any Force attack, including lightning, grip, and other nasty attacks. If you are a dark sider, make sure to put some points in Drain and Grip, or if you are on a small map with a lot of players, lightning is always useful in close quarters. Don't be afraid to use guns if you are on a server that supports them. Explosives are hard to block, but remember that YOU can use force push to push back thrown detonators or missiles. Set trip mines at blind corners or where a weapon or health spawns, get the det packs and set them up on top or behind spawn points for weapons, then watch for someone running up to them and detonate them. All great fun. The guns require little practice, but the saber requires some time to learn the moves, how to telegraph what another player will do, and what swing, moving what direction, does what. Good luck, and happy sabering!
