BCanr2d2
Let's not get into the "supposed" damage caused by the lightning to Vader, I don't think that the lightning never touched Vader. The Emperor and his lightning were aimed away from Vader as he carried him away. I think it is along the lines of what some of the others have said: I think that it was the Dark side that held Vader together, that the Dark side was his life force. Whilst a Sith, he was able to live on the small amount of human tissue left in him, with the assistance of mechanical aid. It was the fact that he had so much dark Force in him, that he was basically full of evil, that the strength of the force that he was able to use kept him alive. Once he turns to the light side, and redeems himself at the end of ROTJ, now with the Light side of the Force in him, his body is ready to succumb to the original injuries received by what ever source, hopefully revealed in Episode 3. I feel that it was a death delayed the 20 or more years after the original injuries, that once on the light side, he was able to accept his injuries, and succumb to the living force, that his job was done, and would be more help as part of the force in spirit and not in body, of which there wasn't much left. CSB_Ajax
*slaps forehead* Sorry, I don't mean to flame, but what the hell is wrong with some of you? LOL. Don't you ever visit the Star Wars website? GL explains that Vader dies because the breathing mechanism in his suit is shorted out by the Emperor's lightning, as a few of you have pointed out. There is nothing else to it, no force explosion, no master-apprentice link, he's just plain fried. The explosion you see when the emperor dies is because Vader threw him into a shaft leading to a secondary power reactor (also from the mouth of GL) and he's rather horribly vaporized. To make another point, Vader only has one organic arm, a throat, and a head - that's it, he has no body. If you visit http://www.starwars.com and read up on Episode III, there's apparently a huge battle between Obi Wan and Anakin (now Darth Vader by name). Obi Wan tosses him into a pit of lava and he's burnt to a crisp almost entirely. He has no lungs, which is why the breather is there - he just can't breathe on his own anymore. The scars you see on his face when he takes his helmet off in Episode VI, and on the back of his head when he's in the sphere on the Executor in Episode V, are burn scars from that same battle. Now, the introduction of the whole "midichlorian sybiotism" with the Force in Episode I raises an interesting question: when Luke fights with Vader, is Vader at full strength? Surely if the degree of control one possesses over the Force is directly related to the number of midichlorians in ones body, then Vader, now being only an arm and a head, would be a helluva lot weaker than he used to be, don't you think? I'm wondering if that's why Vader never considered killing his master - he just doesn't have the balls to even try to beat up Sidious anymore. Anyways, I'm going to quit while I'm ahead with citing facts instead of just speculation. Edit: Hmm... well I just looked at the website again and it seems that they've deactivated the Episode III link since I looked at it last (around August 1999... LOL). They used to have a very vague and brief story describing each of the first three episodes enough to make you want to see them so bad that you'd sell your own grandmother for tickets, but, at the same time, they didn't give you enough information to completely ruin the whole movie. In any case, the site still explains the fact that Vader is killed by the lightning - that much is still there. Unfortunately, my proof of what happened to make Vader that way has disappeared until 2005.

BCanr2d2
CSB_Ajax: I think the midichlorian count is a part per million, or something similar, rather than a total per body...

"come on, all i have is a flesh wound!" surely the head would have died by the time the rest if the body was burnt up? i suppose someone will come up with ideas about Force heal and Force protect and so on!
