Ten Tigers
I really liked the Yavin level in single player. Especially the one where you first land on the planet. I liked all the trees and plants, and the over all feel of it. I know as a multiplayer map it would be quite taxing to a lot of people's systems, but Im running a P4 with GeForce II with plenty of RAM to back it up. I would love to see a level that puts them to use. It doesnt even really need to be a jungle, although I still think a Yavin level would own... Drakewl
lookin at the yavin map you'll see that the devs have been under stress and time pressure, that is one the reasons its running slow even on high systems first, the hint portals have been set unefficiently (you can see this with the help of the r_showtris function) second, faces you can't see havent been caulked by the devs third, regarding the vis range and the scale of vis blocking structures, some heights of the canyon walls were made to low together with the point that hint portals havent been subdiveded in the z axis. areas that sould be usually blocked by canyon walls are processed because you can see the portal, looking over the canyon wall. my conclusion out of this: with some good planning and wise putting of structures you could create a smooth running yavin multiplayer map with plants, water, rain and fog
Andy867
well, right now there is a map in development that requires a pretty high-end graphics card... Sergio over at jedioutcastmaps.com found out the hard way of how much of a drain the Episode 1 put on his card... where he usually gets 150 fps, he was only getting 55!!! and it s becauses of all the custom textures and objects and entities occuring, the map is huge...it isn't released yet, but will be within the 2weeks as noted 3 days ago and for those who haven't seen it yet, http://www.jedioutcastmaps.com has a lot of screenies of the Episode 1 level for your viewing pleasure, and while you're there, don't forget to rate it! Ten Tigers
Thanks for the replies, and especially for the link. I definately remembered to vote for that map. Quite impressive. I gave it a 10...
Vorax
The FFA map that I will be releasing in the WLS FFA Map Pack has all kinds of detail, but it won't tax your computer. It has a multi-level water fall, with custom water textures and splash textures, cliffs, outdoors, castle type area, caves, etc, it is far more detailed then any of the raven MP maps and get average of 40 FPS on a PIII 500 with a PCI video card...on a good computer it should be more like 150 FPS. With hint brushes and attention to design, you can do alot for r_speeds. As Drakewl pointed out above, there is no reason that the Raven maps couldn't perform better...basically, they got a bit lazy is my guess. - Vorax
