Lucas is 0 for 2 now

I just got home from seeing the movie.

I give the action scenes a B+.

Everything else (Dialogue, Acting, Storytelling, Plot, Pace, and overall "fun") I give a "D".

Overall grade C+.

The story was poorly put together and poorly told. The acting was terrible, partly because the dialogue was laugh out loud bad.

Those love scenes were some of the worst acted ever on film in a major motion picture.

Until the major climax scenes at the end, it was actually boring! I thought there would be more action, but you end up having to wait what seems like a long time until the battle at the end.

And the battle at the end has no satisfying pay off.

And sorry folks, you cant blame the weak story on "Lucas is making these for 5 year olds."

He has tried to make this movie partly a political drama; NOT something you find in a kids movie.

This film doesnt measure up to the first three or to any of the great action films of the last few years.

And the movie looks grainy unless you see it on a digital projection system, and most theatres dont have that.

I went into this movie wanting to just enjoy a wild action flick. What I got was lukewarm slop with some tepid action.

C+ is a generous grade i think.

Phantom menace was bland, but this one is just a mess.

(one thing JK2 fans will probably love is the DFA shown in the flick!)

Before I saw the movie, a big gap was missing from the whole 6 movie story.

I think most ACTUAL Star Wars fans were RELIEVED that they answered so many of the questions we have had.

The truth comes out. Star Wars lovers love Star Wars.

'Movie-Goers' like yourself just don't get it! 4/5!

(It loses a star because I'm not 12 I am 27 and they made if for the kids. I'll do like this guy and knock it from 5 to 4 because I am too old... haha)

It's strange to think the Phantom Menace (and AOTC - though I haven't seen it yet - waiting for DVD, but I've seen the trailers) and the first SW 3 movies and THX-1138 were made created by the same person - Lucas.

Also, Lucas made American Graffiti, which had some decent acting and multiple-stories in it.

Than again, to be fair, Spielberg churned out that major POS called A.I.

They both just need to retire or take a step back and bring in some fresh directors/writers - imo.

What questions did they answer?

The tie ins are so "tacked on" its sad. Typical sequel ( prequel in this case) pandering to what the audience liked in the original movies.

Having r2D2 and C3po around is so tacked on its insulting. He only did that because they were funny in the first 3 movies.

Nobody laughed at their forced one liners in the theatre I was in.

And once again i have to say that you cant blame the stupid story on the alleged fact it was written for kids.

You dont have boring political drama in a kids movie.

And kids movies dont have to have dumb stories. The "Hobbit" was for kids and it had a good story, even when it became an animated kids movie.

I guess people forgot what quality writing is like, so now they dont even demand it anymore. Sad.

Yah, the only Sci-Fi stories I've seen worth watching are the new Outer Limits shows - but if you read the credits it's often old sci-fi stories that never made it to video/film, or some of the old Twilight Zone type writers who dug some stories out of the closet and got them produced.

So we have 5 Star Wars movies now.

Is C3Po going to do the same jokes in EVERY Star Wars movie?

Its dumb that he is even in the new trilogy. And even dumber they just have him fussing around with his arms in the air chasing r2D2 in every movie.

Whats wrong with having some new charcters do some new stuff?

That would be risk taking I guess, and Lucas has none of that left in him (unless you count Jar Jar).

too much pressure to maintain his universe and continuity (and explain himself) than he can handle.

he cant keep up with himself.

the series should have started at this point, and instead of being a cartoon, it should have been all story.

he should have stuck to the muppets. then having a crappy story certinly wouldnt have cut it.

Hmm, I don't really care if C3PO and R2D2 were just tacked on to make the audience happy...because that's what they did!!

The movie had its highs/lows, I probably want to see it again, but seriously I don't think at all that it's a bad movie. I had a good time seeing it, and I think that's what matters in most peoples eyes.

Lol at you guys getting upset over a kids movie.

I enjoyed it as an action movie and a star wars movie. It is the first movie that I have talked about all the way home, and the first movie to make me gasp at the visuals.

Get over yourselves.

Everyone seems to rip into the prequels. The fact of the matter is we're all 20 yrs older than when we first saw the origianl trilogy, we now have the ability to analyse and tear to pieces. At the end of the day the original trilogy weren't brilliant films, but they had that unexplainable magic, when we were kids, just like He-man, spiderman, transformers etc. So were reserve a special place for them in our hearts and minds. If you could wipe your memory and watch all 6 films from begining to end, you wouldn't be comparing 1,2 and 3 to 4,5 and 6, and if you didn't you wouldn't have the aggression towards the prequels that everyone seems to have now. You shouldn't compare the prequels to the OT, they're all part of the same Saga. remember the order your supose to watch them in. It doesn't matter that in real time C3P0 was created first in ANH. In the chronology of the films the phantom menace was his genesis. You're all bitching about the way he seems to be going back and explaining himself. At the end of the day he isn't , he's telling a story which has a begining for all characters involved and an end. So what if the prequels aren't as good as the OT? In the grand scheme of things don't you save the best till last.

AOTC was far more inteligent than TPM and actually had emotion in it, believable emotion, the action was second to none, the CG were tolerable. True there were a few cheesy moments in the movie. Let me ask you this natty dread... I know the movie wasn't perfect but if you hold your standards that high, then why are you wasting your time here?

I liked the movie it builds up nicely. Problem is everyone comparing I and II to 4,5,6. I and II so far have been the forces of good getting beaten around by evil and eventually overcoming but still blind to what is going on. As it should be otherwise there would just be the empire and darth vader would lose some of his greatness. 4,5,6 were about a young jedi learning his through the force in a rebellion against the all powerful evil. Seems like the opposite to me.

i personally liked episode II, it showed Anakin as a more troubled spirit that when you look into his eyes you can see the dark brooding anger. Without spoiling it for others some of the parts you can see how he becomes Vader (I think you know where).

As for it being a kids movie where'd you come off with that? I see Jar Jar as kids appeal and guess what, it worked! I hate Jar Jar, others hate Jar Jar, kids love Jar Jar. Wanna know what that means? More fans! I loved the final fight of episode I and I'm infatuated with Darth Maul, great more audiences for people like me! Episode II had some Jar Jar and 3PO one-liners, guess what? kids like it. Just like when you were younger and seeing 3PO thrash around like an idiot telling about the apocalypse it was funny. See the point now? Your watching it for all the wrong reasons. If you go for heavy action and a movie that supports itself then your being niave. The movie is only 1 part of a story. It's like grading only one chapter from a book

i agree with lightstar... although i wasn't up and around during the time of the originals i still have a special place in my heart for it.. this comparison really gets you nowhere. the movie rocked, like any other star wars film there are its ups and downs.. if star wars sucked ****, we wouldn't be hear discussing it would we?

Why do people always mention the dialogue? The script was waaaaaay better than ESB in this respect (which is what we should be comparing it to, not the entire other trilogy. Besides, these two movies have a lot in common, being in the middle of a trilogy, the love sub-plot, nothing solved by the end, tonnes). Go back and watch ESB now, and listen to what the actors are saying. Some of the most corny lines outside of the Matrix are in this movie (theres a good example, the Matrix. Very well directed, very good effects, very very poor dialogue. Just listen to what people say before you jude AOTC). "I love you", "I know". Bloody Shakespear, that is. *cough*

All I'm saying is you are holding the OT in MUCH higher regard than what it deserves. Stop your comparisons, and judge AOTC as a whole separate movie.

Yoda pwns.

I'm gonna start off by saying I loved Attack of the Clones. Attack of the Clones is EPIC. Attack of the Clones is the reason why the cinema was INVENTED. Long and short of it is: Attack of the Clones is STAR WARS.

The love story was good--if disjointed in parts because of the editing... the middle part of the story should definitely be reedited, and that was my only technical beef with this movie. The love story obviously encompassed... let's say at least a week, and it was inter-cut with Obi-Wan's investigation which lasted hours. I think the majority of the Naboo scenes should've been before Obi-Wan arrived on Kamino while the Tatooine scenes should have occurred in the period after Obi-Wan left for Geonesis.

The actual content of the love story was well done. Could see Padme falling for Anakin, you could see that they disagreed with some things--but that for the most part, she didn't take those things seriously even though they will ultimately bring him to the Dark Side. He laughed after he said he thought a dictatorship would work better than the Republic (and even though we know that he wasn't speaking anything but his hard-core opinion that will make him the Emperor's lapdog) she wrote it off as a minor opinion because he laughed! She liked him, she thought he was a handsome, dashing Jedi... and she was all the more impressed because the last time she saw him he was only nine. The Force was pulling at them, fate was drawing them closer... they were young, neither had had a chance to have any real emotional attachment because of their lifestyles. They wanted a thrill. The love story made sense.

Then it took a dark turn when she saw him start to fall. That look in Hayden Christensen's eyes when he was telling her about how he had slaughtered the Tusken Raiders... the music in the back ground... "They were animals and I slaughtered them like animals..." This kid is going to become Darth Vader... it was happening right before her eyes. She saw that, she knew that... he was falling... he'd just lost his mother, he needed someone to latch on to. She saw that, and so she offered herself up for him in hopes that she could bring him out of his downward spiral. We know that this was not the case, and it makes the love story all the more haunting.

I knew the story before I went into the theater... I'm what you might call a "spoiler junky." I thought this might hinder my experience. It didn't. I knew the premise of the love story... but Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen made it real. All of these things I've said above... they portrayed! They were expressive, they brought across everything... filled in all the holes the dialogue missed. That's where movies really lose ground to books--you don't see what's going on behind the words, you don't hear the exposition of thoughts. But here... you could tell what they were thinking. Young, in love, their emotions shallow and passionate enough to be clear through the eyes. Unbelievable.

Attack of the Clones is Star Wars... this is the story of Anakin Skywalker--people say that if it didn't have the SW characters and the Star Wars brand name above "Attack of the Clones", no one would have liked it. And you know what? They wouldn't have. Because this is a character-driven movie... and we already know the fate of all of these characters and we thirst to find out why they become as they are. We're seeing the birth of Vader coinciding with the birth of the Empire. Through the loss of his arm, he has started a collection of injuries that will make him "more machine... than man. Twisted and evil." The Death Star, the clone army that becomes the Stormtroopers, the war which gives Palpatine dictatorial powers and allows him to become the Emperor. Hell, in the last scene between Sidious and Tyranus, they're standing in the half-constructed IMPERIAL PALACE!

All of the pieces are falling into place for the Sith... the Empire is really born in this episode, just as Vader is lurking just below the surface of Anakin Skywalker. The Empire is really just the Republic under martial law, and a martial law that Palpatine will never give up. They gave him an inch and he took the whole galaxy.

This is an incredible movie. I rank it above Empire... the stories are similar, mirroring the original trilogy--we see father and son confronted by the same perils and we see the son make the right choices and the father the wrong ones. But Attack of the Clones has SCALE. Lucas is a genius--this is his brainchild and he knows it intimately. Coruscant is a real place, with real people; I wanted to live there. Lucas has a vision and if ILM and their CGI technology can furnish that vision, more power to them. Some parts looked unrealistic--the Yoda model was obviously CG... but you know what? It doesn't matter. This is a fairy tale--the CG matte paintings and the CG characters just furnish the story... they're illustrations.

The last scenes, where Palpatine is looking out over the army that will cement his power boarding proto-Star Destroyers. Goosebumps were prickling up all over my skin because I just thought "I've never seen anything like this before... this is epic... this is Star Wars."
