Lethal Weapon

To be fair to Lucas ...

I think if the critics analyzed the movie Lethal Weapon from the same perspective they analzyed the two new Star Wars movies (and perhaps they have) they'd probably come to similar results.

The problem is they are excepting these recent SW movies to be something they are not - well rounded movies that cover all the aspects that lend to an impressive drama.

It's a fantasy film with lots of action.

So I ask, if they critiqued Lethal Weapon with the same expectations would the movie get the same criticisms - wooden characters, poor storyline, lots of action little theme and plot?

Of course, if you compare them to the first 3 movies made, well, they were fairly well rounded, so what the heck went wrong?
