Client Upload?

DMK

Recommended Posts

I run a 5 player Duel server on a PIII 750 512mb ram on Windows 2k Adv. server.

I'm using a dedicated server.exe file from file planet so I don't need a vc that supports opengl.

How much bandwidth does the client need from my server?

ie Half-life Clients take ~4kb up and I was wondering how much do they take for jedi?

I did a speed test and I have a 24KB upload that fluctuates of course due to cable.

Thanks in advance!

The most important server setting related to bandwidth use is sv_maxrate. Generally, it's set between 8000-10000. The max that an unaltered client will use is 25000 (Cable/DSL/LAN). Modem users generally have it set between 2500-5000. The rate that is used is the lower of the client's rate or the server's rate. I have a 16 player CTF server with a maxrate of 7000. When full, it utilizes about 70k/sec upload--about 4.4k/sec per client on average.

You can, of course, set your maxrate lower to fit more players on your server. With an upload of around 25k/sec, I'd say you are probably limited to a duel server or a very small FFA/CTF server. You can experiment, but I'd say that 8 or so would be around the max--assuming you use a maxrate around 5000-6000. You'll know when you hit your upload limit because the lag will get worse and worse.

Good luck.
