Is it just me...

...or does this time period read like something out of a forgotten realms novel?

It now strikes me why Bioware chose this period to develop in. This really is the Middle-Earth of the EU canon, eh?

I'll reserve judgement until I see my first mechanized dragon, or something of that sort ( ;) ), but I seriously hope Bioware doesn't over do it with the force power visual effects (last thing I want to see is my avatar casting fireballs or force pushing a fleet of star ships across the galaxy).

Can anybody more aquainted with this period quell my fears?

I think Bio-wares name brings hope, more than orcs. After all the BG series is one of the best RPGs out there, NWN looks set to be another hit, and their other game (based on the fallout engine, but fantasy) also looks good.

With all that fantasy at the moment, I doubt they will add any to this game, but then again Star Wars is often closer to Tolken than to Asimov, or other classic sci-fi.

I even remember reading that lucus just planned a fantasy film, but then added space ships and guns.

Classic, farm boy goes off to save princess, only to find out he is a great wizzard, and the only hope for the whole kingdom.

oops, your right about lion heart. Hrmmm... That means biowares other project is still secret... hmmm, woudner what it is....

So if you don't like Asimov, (its been over 12-15 years since I read any Asimov) what sci-fi authors do you like?

My top list today (maybe different tomorrow):

William Gibson

Orsen Scot Card

Hamilton (forget his first name)

I think you guys are overlooking my point a bit. Star Wars is Star Wars, and I can concede that it totes the line between sci-fi and fantasy quite a bit.

This Star Wars, though, could have leapt from the pages of some two bit, cliche ridden AD&D novel (drangonlance). No offense meant to this game, but if the dramas in this setting play out like the story in my aforementioned link, well.. I'll be disappointed.

Come on, the story of Ulic Qel-Droma unfolds like the fall of Jon Irenicas. Korriban sounds like a rehash of Mordor from Lord of the Rings. The clothing worn by the female jedi in teh screen shots is right out of forgotten realms (or some demented Ralph Bakshi movie). The pictures of Ulic could have also been snatched from a circa 1980s edition of Dragon magazine.

Maybe I've been given a skewed impression of the time period by that bio I posted, at least I hope so. Hence the is reason I chose to post this concern, so you guys (whom I hope are more familiar with the EU references for this period) could quell my fears.

Ohh well, maybe I'm just burnt on BG2, and busty girls scantly clad in leather armor. ;)

if you read the comics its looks alot better than the way its presented at starwars.com...and i was kinda hoping they would use that particular time periodanyway as its alot more relaxed about the starwars canon than later periods so bioware can have alot more creative freedom if you ask me...
