Spyque64
OK, Ive heard this mentioned before, but cant find an explanation. Some here have said that they wont re-explain because they are sick of repeating it 1k times. No Search feature, so I cant do that. Ive read alot of the tuts, but no mention of it anywhere. Its NOT anywhere in the FAQ's, yet I hear that it is very important for map making. So is there anyone out there that will clue us n00bz in on the secret of this?? Or are we just SOL? Xcom
Hm, well the difference is: Structural brush is a part of BSP tree, it blocks VIS. Detail brush is not a part of BSP tree, it doesn't block VIS. As to how to use them, well, there were always discussion going at all Q3 editing forums which I visited. Some ppl have different opinions regarding this. Some very talented ppl whom I happen to know claim that they first build simple structural hulls for their maps and then create all other architecture from detail brushes. Basically, all brushes that are not meant to block VIS should be made detail. Walls, ceilings, floors should remain structural for the sake of performance. The VIS compile times will be significantly improved by this. Yet, others claim that although VIS stage goes faster, the LIGHT stage is processed longer. So, there is no real benefit in compile times. Detail brushes will make your BSP file size smaller. The difference in performance is also questionable. For the engine, it doesn't matter what brush it is. I mean triangle is a triangle and it takes equal time to proces/render it, regardless structural or detail. But sometimes detail don't cause BSP splits (as they are not part of it) so theoretically there will be less tris (aka better performance). Yet, sometimes they do (I've seen it happening). I guess it depends on placement. So, I guess it very much depends on a map and its layout.
Wacky_Baccy
I found this last night, and it gave me a much better understanding of the difference and pros/cons - it also has a section on hint brushes, in case you're interested
