dendol
There has been alot of discussion in this forum(like this one) about light side v dark side powers, and what a jedi is or is not allowed to do with his/her use of the force. It has led me to think about the possibility of using dark side powers (such as lightning, choking) but still remain a jedi. Does a force user have to be either light side or dark side, but never a bit of both? so if a jedi constantly uses lightning or choking to defend himself, rather than using his lightsaber to cut up his attacker, will he eventually become so consumed with the dark side that he will become pure evil? or can he tell himself "i am still using my powers for the greater good, so im not really dark side". Or is it simply the very nature of the force makes a user either good or evil? Have there been any examples of a 'grey' side jedi?
Bluezman
I think this whole classifying thing "dark side powers", "light side powers" comes from video games. In Jedi Knight and in Jedi Knight II you can only chose "Lightning" when you choose "Dark Side". I don't think you canreally classify them this way. Being light side or dark side is much more about how you use the force, what are your intentions, what is your attitude? The force shall be used only for healing, wisdom, seeing the future, defence. Lightning and gripping is pretty much offensive by nature. A true light side Jedi wouldn't make use of the force in such an aggressive way, unless maybe to defend himself. For instance I wondered about the scene where Yoda casts Dookus lightning back at him. Probably he couldn't absorb it or something, however using lightning against Dooku obviously doesn't make him Dark Side. I believe that being mindless about the force like Anakin does (playing with the little metal ball in Padmes room on Coruscant or playing with that fruit on Naboo) also leads to the dark side, although he only uses it for playing or to woe a woman. It is mindless and arrogant. The force shouldn't be used like that, just like you don't play football in a church.
seanMO
The force itself is neither dark or light. How you use it determines how people classify it. The force itself is simply the life force that runs through every living thing in the universe. Every living thing posseses the force to some degree. Its the midachlorians that make the jedi different. The mids acts as a focuser or intensifier of the force, much like a magnifying glass focuses and concentrates light to make it more powerful. Even lightning could be used for good in certain circumstances, against an object or obstacle. The dark side is more a state of mind. like the other poster said. Exar Kun II
Simply put, Dark force powers are OFFENSIVE in nature. Light force powers are DEFENSIVE.

ivaj
I thinnk that because the dark side wants to hurt they use lightning/choking, etc. While since the light side is about peace, their powers aren't as violent.
Outrider
Quite a few jedi are seen to use both sides of the force, Yoda redirecting Dooku's lightning back at him, Luke's force grip on the Gamorrean Guards in Jabba's Palace. Even Dooku himself, who was a Jedi and became one of the Lost 20, at some point must have used both light and dark powers during his transition to Sith Apprentice. Just a thought.... Cow_JK:O
Redirect would be a more neutral in the sense that it is neither entirely offensive nor entirely defensive.

That is, why would a jedi using lightning to defend the innocent (as an example), have to eventaully fall to the dark side because of this use?
