stevea
I'm running a dedicated server on my LAN that is also connected to the Internet. I set the max rate to 10000 on the server and on my LAN client, but there are some bad lag spikes where my LAN client gets the bad connection icon in the bottom right corner of the window. I have the server setup for duels, and it never has more than 5 players...any ideas? It's a P3 550 with 512MB RAM. Thanks!
MatrixCPA
I remember hearing other admins say this happened to them. Whenever a server was used by both LAN and internet clients. I don't recall a solution being found at the time. I suppose I could ask the programmers if they have an idea why that happens.
Jasco Smlee
What port is your server running on? Try running it on a different port to your game client. I play on my Internet server via LAN, and don't seem to have problems. My lan client uses 28070 and my server is on 28071.

Can you tell me how to specify which port to use on the server and on the client?
Jasco Smlee
To change your server's port add +set net_port xxxxx to the shortcut to your server, where xxxxx is the port you want to use. I'm not sure how to change the client's port, that's why I changed my server's instead
stevea
Thx again! Will my server still show up on the public list? I would assume that it broadcasts the port along with the IP, but I guess I'll find out.

MatrixCPA
Hitch warning are the server's way of saying, "I had to think about something really hard and it might have caused some lag for any connected players." I'm assuming that you were client 4? Seems odd that it would show you switching teams over and over when you are simply staying a spectator. Does it happen when you are playing as well? stevea
This happens both when I'm playing and when in spectator mode. Maybe my rate isn't setup right. On my client I typed: rate 10000
MatrixCPA
I know for a fact that the sv_maxrate setting isn't applied against locally connected players. I'm not sure if the client rate setting is or is not applied. I'll mention it to the mp programmers and see what they say.
Jasco Smlee
Are you running any software firewalls at all? My game server runs on Win2K Pro and this box is also my internet gateway, so I run Zonealarm firewall on it. I did try once using a different firewall but it caused similar problems to what you are experiencing (connection problems and hitch warnings). What OS is your game server running on? Jasco Smlee
How is your game server connected to the internet? Through a pc gateway or a router or directly? What version of the server software are you running? Just trying to get an idea of your set up and discover the differences between yours and mine. stevea
I'm connected via DSL. Win2k SP2, and the JK2 dedicated server exe file that I downloaded. Thx,
