Exar Kun II
Though this does not concern Episode 1 or 2 directly, it's a question regarding the continuity of the films. I'm not nitpicking, I'm just curious. In Episode IV when we first meet Obi-Wan, he shows Luke the lightsaber that belonged to Anakin. The next time we see Obi-wan use the saber is in the Cantina at Mos Eisley. The last time we see Obi-Wan, is in his classic face-off with Vader/Anakin. Now, Obi-wan is clearly holding the saber when Darth, ironically, cuts him in half, the same way Obi-wan did Maul years before(yes, I know Obi-Wan didn't "die" in the normal sense but, he was gone, nonetheless). Obi-wan is clearly holding the lightsaber when this happens. Now, Luke does not recover the saber, and we do not see him with it for the rest of the film. There is no mention of it again. NOW. . . In Episode V, Luke has the lightsaber, and if you look at the base grip, it is the same as Anakin's. This leads me to ONE of 2 conclusions. 1. Obi-Wan let Luke keep Anakin's saber. I find this unlikely, because I cannot fathom Obi-Wan being as irresponsible as letting Luke, who didn't even really know what a Jedi was at the time, keep what was undoubtedly the most powerful handheld weapon in existence(the sentimentality of it being his father Anakin's nonwithstanding), as Luke would not have been able to wield it. I always thought that Obi-Wan, after showing Luke the saber and explaining who his father was, had taken the weapon back and that was the one we saw him use for the duration of the film. Perhaps the saber that we see Ben die with is his own, and Luke still had Anakin's. I say this because. . . 2. In Episode V, Luke has a lightsaber, and if you look at the grip, it look's like Anakin's, as I stated previously. Now, either Ben let him keep the weapon after their first meeting(again, which I find difficult to believe)or the more obvious answer is that Luke built his own from scratch. If this is the case, then how? Luke had not even begun his Jedi training(accept for his brief encounter with the seeker on the Millenium Falcon in Episode IV), so how would he have known how to construct a lightsaber? Did Obi-Wan's spirit guide him through the process? WHERE DID THE SABER COME FROM? If i'm thinking too much, just tell me to be quiet:D . Any answers are welcome. MotionMan
Obi wan let him keep it. Remember that he told luke "your father wanted me to give you this" Then Luke uses that saber to practice deflecting lazer blasts with the helmet on. remember? then in ESB vader cuts his hand off and he drops the saber. In ROTJ he builds his own saber. Hope that helps.
Nebelwerfer_
motion mans' right, something else I found out (from the action figures) is that vaders light saber is very very similar to the one luke uses in ANH and ESB (yes I know that it used to be ankins') the bases are exactly the same except vaders is black. This totally gives it away that Anikin lost his lightsaber when ben kicked his arse and then ben took it and gave it to luke, and meanwhile vader made his own similar to his old one but made the blade red. J. Master Eric
Actually Luke built his new lightsaber in between ESB and ROTJ, not during ROTJ. You can read how he did it in the book "Shadows Of The Empire"

Ok, I can't believe no one addressed this... Luke and Obi-Wan BOTH have sabers. Obi-Wan's OT saber is similar to his PT saber, but less intricate it seems. Luke DOES use Anakin's old saber, he just left it on board the Falcon while they were in the Death Star. You never see it clipped to any belt he may be wearing. But in short, Obi-Wan used his OWN saber, which he would be more accustomed to, whenever you see the blue blade on screen in Obi Wan's hands.... If you look at the two saber hilts, there are definite similarities...

Ya to answer your question Obi-Wan has his own lightsaber, he never used the one he gave to Luke. If you look at the one he uses at the bar scene and the duel w/ Vader, the one he gives to Luke, his fathers saber, is diffenet, I cant believe u never noticed that! And I cant believe u even asked a question like that, no hard feelings

Seriously, I went back and looked at Episode IV(I didn`t have access to it at the time of the post)and I see the saber handles are distincltly different, so. . .I have my answer. Thanks, everybody. obi
Who cares? its a saber! Just kidding. I used to be obsessed woth building/buying saber props, and I read that ESB Saber was the same as ANH saber, except it had a few modifications. And If you read "Shadows Of the Empire" , As suggested earlier, You will read that Luke built his new saber to resemble Ben's from ANH. And, The saber does resemble it a great deal. Jaster21801
eh, I had a witty reply, but it doesn't really matter... cuz that may very well be his reason... of course, if he had been SMARTER, he might have taken it with him, then he mighta had more luck with doors and the dianoga and such...
