Huge slowdowns

Hi,

I have some small problems with the speed of the game...

The game itself runs with 15 to 70 frames (swamp<->medium sized rooms), which mainly depends on the visible polygons.

But the following ist §$%&:

- When I first load a save, it needs ca. 20-40 seconds to load. But when I load a second time it takes up to 10 Minutes. I have to quit and restart the whole game to get acceptable loading times.

- Once I am in a game, the mouse cursor in the save/load menu doesn't move - it jumps every second to the new position. Other menus are not affected.

- When displaying Video-Clips (like the arrival of the rebellion near the doomgiver) I get only 1 frame per 5 seconds.

- Scripted ingame sequences (like the first meeting with lando) are running fine... exept the last one... when I kill Desann, I have a problem similar to the one with the Movies, except that I get max 1 frame in 10 to 15 seconds

My system:

- Duron 650

- 768 MB Ram

- Voodoo 3000

Sure, they're a little bit old, but I have never had any problems. They are enough to play the whole game and all scripted sequences run fine. Except the last one. During the fight against Desann I have 30-40 fps. Why not in the following sequence?

And about the video clips, I have no problems watching a DVD or 3 DivX movies at the same time. That should be enough.

And the loading times. The first seems to be normal, why not the following ones? It does'nt help when I end the game and return to the menus, I must quit and restart it... the game seems to have a problem with letting resources go. :(

perhaps its your video card? i have a p3 500, 256 MB RAM and Geforce 2 MX400 (yes MX) and i can run it at 1024x768 with a little choppyness, and 800x600 w/ none. my problem is loading the game fromthe menu while not in a game. it takes me forever to load all of the models!

anyway, you really should get rid of that piece of sh-t voodoo card. i had a voodoo 3000, and i could barely play counter-strike w/ it (15-25fps constantly) try to get a geforce card. preferably 4, but 3 is more resonable. 2 is out of date now, but its dirt cheap

Hmm... maybe you're right... but when I upgrade to a GeForce 4 the CPU will be to slow to use all of it's advantages and when I upgrade the CPU, I need a new mainboard and then the 133-SD-Ram won't work. :(

Perhaps I should wait till I have the money to buy a whole new system... :(

But that should be independet to the problems with loading times. I have no idea how to solve this...

Fufafu is right, your video card WAS a very good card a few years ago, but now it isn't exactly bleeding edge technology :p .

Also, the manufacturer is out of business a few years ago.. so you are playing with unsupported HW, and you will experience problems like this more often than not..

If you are considering upgrading, I'll tell you that buying anything from a Geforce 2 GTS (if you still find one) to a Geforce 4 MX 460 would give you a considerable performance boost for the time being and you can find them really cheap; and you don't need to upgrade the processor as well to enjoy the benefits of having a graphics card w/GPU (that said, with a Duron processor I wouldn't consider buying anything better than a Geforce 4 MX card).

Anyway, the first thing to do when you run into problems like this, is checking out the support page:

http://support.lucasarts.com/trg/tgd.asp?id=2403&g=120&s=4

You can read there that your problems are known issues and may have some solutions (or not, depends).

And there is also a much more appropriate forum for technical questions btw, with relevant threads:
