The best "fun" map idea you've ever heard (free style walking)

I'm forming a team to make what we'll call "Free Style Walkin". Here's the premise.

I've discovered that by applying the "slippery" system texture to skate park shaped objects makes it like you're skateboarding w/ out a board, hence the "Free style walking". Really, if you just tacked on a board to vader's feet it would be a skating game :). Anyway, I wanna make a fun map that's basicly a skate park. It would/will be hella funny w/ all these jedi skateing about and hacking eachother to bits. I make a few basic jumps, and some rails (truly awesome the rails). It was so much fun slipping around, doing tricks, and sliceing up the bots while I did it.

I need people that are good at making curved things (I'm new at it) because we'd need half pipes and such. Please, post here if you're interested, and point me in the direction of any work you've done (even if you don't have any, post your interest).

im all ready working on a mod just look of a tut on it in gtk you make a mesh and select one whole row(the lastone) and bend it up then just bend the other side up the same way make the mesh like 5x5 should work maybe more im not to sure then make an endcap for it! and there ya go.

o i guess i could make a half pipe and send it to you for refrence?

I actually almost made a skatepark map for EliteForce. I was gonna make Tony Hawks:Pro Skater 1 map of the school. I just never got around to it though. Something I was thinking of doing though was to put in a bunch of trigger_push entities to push you in the air when you go up a ramp, it might look wierd though because i'm not quite sure how you'd land.

No i'm not interested in joining your team. Read some tutorials and spend just a few day's learning about patch meshes and the various tools to manipulate brushes, it's all pretty simple and you should be able to do this yourself.

Edit: sorry, I missed the previous post about the push up the ramp thing. Yeah, just use a trigger_push for that.

That's an over-complex way to do it (VIO's description)...

Just make a long-lengthed bevel and turn it sideways... add an inverted bevel endcap... copy that, flip it on its x or y axis, and put it next to the other one.

If you want to launch people up the halfpipe, you can put a trigger_push (targetted to a target_position I think... might be another target) at the bottom to launch them up it.

But when you land, it'll just launch you back up again... best way to do it I think would be to script it to turn off that trigger_push until you pass the center of the halfpipe again... not sure how that would work exactly tho, but it's worth a shot. :)

And yes, just read tutorials and learn it on your own... it's not difficult, just takes a bit of experimentation. :)

Ok, thanks for the advice. I'm not sure I'll need to pushes for most of the map, just the pipe I think. And I've decided to just have this be part of a larger map idea I had (a beach and park). So it won't be huge, just a nice little part of a larger map.

That's actually the trick to making a good large map. :) Any large map should have several sections that are each memorable in and of themselves, yet make a good overall impression...

Take ffa_bespin (I think is the name). You have definite sections... the smaller side area, the central open area, and then the platform hanging over the abyss.

You'll notice when you play that not many people play in the smaller side area... that's because it's basically the same thing as the central area (except with a staircase). The area is uninteresting and small, so less people go there.

If you have several interesting fun-to-play-in areas, then people will spread out evenly in your level when they play it.

This has been another edition of level design tips by RichDiesal...

As to tricks, I made them up.

Like I'd go off a jump, hit a wall, and kick off of it. You can do flips why you're jumping, and I managed a 540, but that's really hard. You can get air, most of it you make by jumping when you reach the top of a jump. It looks cool and realistic.
