My veiw on napster is that if it was on the radio is should be allowed on napster but there's a drawback to that. frown.gif If people start using that as an excuse then the amount of songs played on the radio might plummet. frown.gif Oh well, we'll have to pay for napster soon enough.

Only trouble with that example is that far more people have access to radios that can pickup the stations that play music they like than have computers with fast enough connections and big enough hard drives to make searching, downloading, and storing the music practical.

But otherwise, good comparison. I mean a person can just listen to the radio and tape every song that comes on, onto cheap cassette tapes for their personal enjoyment later. I used to do that all the time until I went to university. By the same token, a person can just tape everything on TV onto blank VHS tapes if they want to, etc.

Heck, it's funny, at a college such as mine, banning Napster from every single gosh darn computer in the entire town (or requiring people to pay a fee to use it, making it less attractive) would do no good at all to stop MP3 usage.

Why? Because here almost everyone in the dorms is hooked into the network, in fact I think now people pay for it whether they like it or not, so they might as well hook in to the ethernet. What happens is, using easily distributed software, people rip the CD's they bring with them (and what college age person doesn't have at least a few CD's?) and put them up on the network.

Multiply that by thousands of students and you have a huge universe of MP3's that is ever growing. And in addition, anybody can put up MP3s for download (it's tough to monitor all those sites to prevent a person from putting up music for free) from their website.

The only way they could possibly pull it off would be to invade everyone's privacy and monitor everyone's computer constantly, and impose severe penalties for infractions. It would be impractical, expensive, and nobody would stand for it for long. Besides, hackers would find a way to subvert it probably anyhow.

Somewhere I read that the college set was the biggest consumer group that purchased music (sorry I can't recall my source). I've also sworn that I heard that universities are the biggest sources of piracy. So I figure its a losing battle they're fighting, whether you agree with the principles (or excuses) behind the piracy or not. It's just too easy to do.

My brother went to ames too and i'm pretty sure that's were i'm going unless I find a college that deals with computer engineering and chiropractics. So why did you decide to go to ames anyway? Ya, I don't see any way that you could put an end to the exchange of mp3s. I think the only thing that's going to stop the legal problems is if they allow the exchange of them but charge a small fee like their going to do with napster.

Well basically no special reasons, it was just close, affordable, and it had a nice campus. My original major was CompSci so that fit pretty well with the image of the "technology/science" type of university.

Cool, well if you come here before I graduate, drop me a line sometime, look me up. ; )
