Assault Mechs

In most of my games i normally build up large groups of mechs, and so never go 1-on-1 so i was just wondering, in a 1-on-1 engagement between a mech destroyer and assault mech, which would win?

Assault mech. But mech destroyers cost only carbon and food while assault mechs are incredibly expensive, so cost effectively you would end up losing. In a test I did 3 republic mech destroyers will destroy one empire assault mech if the mech destroyers are staggered.
