Bomber's in CC...

been thinking about this, and really, in CC, bomber's are obselete. They can't take much damage, they have to get right up close to their target, and just generally get slaughtered. So with the air cruiser doing everything the bomber can do, and better, what is the use for the bomber?

An example of this is i was playing as the Republic against the empire and built 40 fully upgraded bomber's. I then sent them up against one fortress (although there was about 3 or 4 others near it) and they did about 5% damage to the one fortress before being completely wiped out.

So what can be done to make bomber's useful again?

I tend to agree with you on this one. As well as fortresses, anti-air turrets are very effective too. I feel that I have to eliminate these threats before using air otherwise it seems to be a waste of resources....

Unfortunately there are no equivalents to the B52 where you can do high-altitude carpet bombing from out of harms way :D or have bombers with long range air-surface missiles.....

Based on my experience to date, I think the only solution is to use ground forces as your initial assault and then use air if you wish :biggs:

They cost around 50 food and 50 nova i think which isn't very much if you have holocrons. In tech 4 you can get an army of 40 bombers and 30 fighters quite quickly from like 6+ Air factories. Unless they know it's coming Massed Bombers is the best way of attacking in my opinion. So if you want yo mass Bombers don't let your opponent know.

i would normally send in 110s of ground troops anfd maybe a coulpe of air ships to watch over them as if you think in real life a slight hit to a aircraft would make it exsplode,or crash.and all though this is the star wars galaxy lucas arts are also trying to make this as real as they can to get the player thinking what he would do in this posiston.so if i was you troops or mechs are the best option.

Once you hit tech IV, yeah the bombers tend to become obsolete simply because of Air Cruisers. I use bombers a lot during tech III though for air rushing. Also, they do have at least one advantage over the Air Cruiser, that being speed. I'll use bombing runs to destroy artillery, jedis, and assault mechs, especially when I can't get an Air Cruiser in position fast enough. And if you can avoid AA, they still work rather well to bomb buildings, especially if you're looking to screw up production (hitting power cores) or economy (hitting animal facilities, mining, etc). They can also be good support for ground troops for wiping out laser turrets.

Contrary to my earlier post I am now using bombers (!) in a support role in CC Republic mission 2 alongside cruisers and jedi sfighters and jedi masters. I found that the republic assault mechs + anti air-troopers not as effective as Confeds'. Now turn all fixed anit-air using the Jedi (indulged myself a bit and converted farms etc. - I though it was amusing!), then get jedi sfighters to watch out for mobile anti-air while cruisers with back up bomber support go for the buildings...seems to be working at the moment........

air units are o.k maybe for escorting extra units, partroling but dont rlay on them in games all the time troops are the most effective and air units are o.k but most bases have some kind of anti air thing its o.k to use them agaist rookies who dont put anti air guns in there base but again dont rely on them.

AA turrets are almost useless until T4 and its homing sensor upgrade. About the only air unit they can actually hit without the upgrade would probably be air crusiers (which arent even T3 units), and even then only at close range. If someone built just AA in T3 and built no air I would just send a few fighters over, dodge the missiles and kill their workers.

Yeah, that's one of the reason I don't put a lot of stock in AA units (other than perhaps ships, though even then I usually give them fighter cover) until I get homing missiles. It's fairly easy to down AA troops and AA artillery with fighters, though it requires a fair bit of micromanaging. Granted, once homing missiles are researched, AA units become a much greater threat.

More fuel for thought on this one....got to the citadel part of Republic mission 2 with my attack force of an earlier post and, well, i got wiped out by all that anti-air defence. I needed to generate a ground force to wipe out their army, then get the jedi to 'turn or destroy' the anti-air turrets and then use my cruisers to take out the fortressess (couldn't use bombers as they were within range of the fortresses anti-air). After all this I could then use my bombers. Is this suggesting that they do have limited value?

On a separate point, I think the Jedi Masters are really entertaining, getting them to 'turn' stuff and then seeing how your opponent exclusively concentrates on what you've turned is funny...it's a valuable distraction...

I manage to drag most of their ground forces across the bridge then leveled them with air cruisers. This was the first time I was really playing republic (and could generate troops) so I flooded the area with troopers after I decked the fortresses with a few cannons. Masses of AA can be problematic in a case such as this, yes, but it's really not that hard to combat against (at least with the computer). It would have been easy to air drop a number of assaults in near the base and wipe it out...

I think bombers are still great because cruisers are slow and expensive and you cant even use them until tech 4 which comes later in the game. That's like saying you dont need mech destroyers and strike mechs because there are assault mechs.

I think I talked about this once before, but...

The advantage of bombers is that they are the game's fastest-moving siege unit (apart from perhaps the Reek, I've not compared the two to be honest. If you consider the Reek a siege unit, anyway.) They are also, as has been pointed out, quite cheap.

Yes, Air Cruisers have that huuuuge blast and the range. They also get stuck with a fifteen-second reload time - or is it even longer? I forget. They're also as slow as fudge.

The purpose of Air Cruisers is to take down AA turrets from outside their range, and on on occasion to butcher tightly packed groups of units. But if you spend the same amount of resources on bombers as you would on a single AC, you can smash large numbers of buildings much more quickly. The fire rate of a bomber is much, much faster than that of an AC, and they have some splash damage themselves, too.

No aircraft is resilient enough to resist concentrated AA fire. Five bombers will quickly level a normal AA turret, but if you're flying even large numbers of bombers into a network of fortresses, then I think you were being optimistic at best.

As others have said, ground troops are really the bread-and-butter of SWGB warfare. But if you are committed to a dedicated attack from the air, you'll do much better with three ACs to crack open defences and twenty bombers to quickly level the buildings than you would with five ACs. Try it and see.
