Pada-Wan
I was wondering this because wasn't Anakin/Vadar the "Chosen one"? He was supposed to be the most powerful Jedi ever. Yet Luke beat him when he was swinging like a madman. And Luke didn't have much training and became a Jedi at a old age. So why did he beat Vadar? eben15
Vader, was the chosen one who would bring balance to the force, he did this by throwing the emperor down a well. Vader's being the chosen one didn't make him any more of a badass. Vader, let Luke win. He did not want to kill his son, he was trying to get Luke to kill him in anger, thus completing his journey to the dark side.
Shadow Angel
Wow, I'm so far the only one that voted for "he was beaten by the better man". Not to say that the others couldn't be true, but I believe that Luke really is better. Let's face it, the entire "chosen one" thing is pretty corny, and doesn't mean that Anakin/Vader will win everything. Look at AOTC, for example. He got his @$$ handed to him by Darth Tyranus, even though he had two sabers. If you want to bring up the point that Luke's moves weren't flashy like in the prequels, well, I think that was just due to either technical purposes because certain limitations, or that the choerographer was too lazy. If ROTJ were made today, Luke would put Darth Maul or Tyranus to shame in skill and flashy moves. I didn't see Vader do anything impressive, either, especially the Vader vs. Obi-Wan fight in ANH. In addition, Luke is the main hero of the OT, not Vader, no matter how many times you look at it. In fact, the whole "chosen one" thing was probably not even thought of back in 1984. It doesn't matter if you like him or not, people just don't seem to acknowledge the fact that Luke Skywalker, son the "chosen one," is a force (pun intended, I suppose) to be reckoned with. And I'm not going to credit EU on this one, either, because they made him look like a wimp, even compared to his own sudents. Now, who agrees with me? Hanch Saode
2 things.... 1. He was his son...Vader felt great feelings for his son...so he didn't wish to hurt him. 2. Luke was the offspring of the Chosen One....need I say more?
Darth Groovy
I think Vader was torn between fullfilling his master's wishes for turning Luke over to the Darkside, and the love he had hidden for his son. He knew that either way death was imminate so he choose to kill the emporer for the love of his son. That's my ten cents, my two cents is free. -[MotU]-Lyger|=-
Vader Lost because the good inside of him was getting to him and luke went ape sh-t on vader in rage over the fact that Vader might turn leia to the darkside, but it was REAL stupid if you guys just watch, vader just goes limp. seriously for no reason he just gives up laying on the ground and has his arm resting on a poll and luke just comes around and chops it off

My opinion: Vader didn't want to kill his own son + Whatever put Vader in that suit (oh I don't, know maybe falling into a pit of Lava for example but since I have yet to see EP 3 I can't say thats what it was for sure.) also probably made him less than half as powerful (he is more man than machine and a machine can't be force sensetive) while Luke is theoreticaly marginally more than half as powerfull as Anakin so Luke was more powerful than Vader. techsurfer
Luke ignited the inner conflict in vader between good and evil which vader thought had been quenched. This threw him off balance and he started to feel for his son - not a traight of the dark side - so when Luke got angry and started hacking like crazy he was able to cut off Vader's hand. Divine Spirit
IMO Vader went easy on Luke because the Emporer wanted Luke to stay alive and use his hate to turn to the dark side. Unfortunately for Vader, Luke was better than he expected and he managed to overpower Vader.
