Kahl
Hey, i'm tryin to learn some modeling and would like to learn to make saber hilts and char. models. i've been following a tutorial at the following link http://www.btinternet.com/~howe_alison/brothers/tutorial/gmax_jkii_tutorial.htm i've gotten to the part where he UVunwrapps the model. but he dont explain how this is done. i've looked in the forum for links to web sites with tutorials. but all i find is tutorials where you need to download extra programs and dont fully explain the full aspect of unwrapping. can someone help me out? im frustrated and this really sucks for a newb heh. oh, if it matters {and probley will}, i'm using 3ds max 4.0 thanks all
KMan
In max, go to Help - Tutorials Character modeling - Tutorial 9 Games Production - Tutorial 15 This goes over some of the uses of UVW in their tuts. That would be a good start. Also check out some of the tutorials here. Not all of them will be related to the max unwrap modifier though. http://www.quake3world.com/ubb/Forum11/HTML/001100.html

SAIK HUAT
Dont give up, it took me 3 days without progressing just to figureout how it works and what it does. Let me try and guide you in the right direction. Im a newb myself and hopefully me and you will be on the same wave length. First get the texporter plugin you can find on the internet, use it and see what it does. It will look at your UVWMAP coordanates and make a texture for them, which you can paint and paste over your 3d mesh. When you see how it works you will know how to lay out your UVWMAP coords. Remember to deselect the *backface* option off on the texporter plugin. OK now select apart of the model you wanna skin (assuming you have segmented your model), now goto the rollout menu in the stack and select UVWMAP. Now in that modifier click *edit* in the UVWMAP propities. You will see the coords for your mesh, muddle them around till you can skin the part your mapping and thats it, textport it and paint away. To put the skin on your model use the material editor and read up about the asset browser. This is a rough explaination and will require some knowledge on your behalf. KBell
The way i UVWrap my sabers is In the UVWrap menue, click on the Cylindral option, then click "fit" then Unwrap your model and it already comes unwrapped for you. You just have to size the Diagram of the saber down to fit the grey box. Look, if you really need help, just PM me and i would be happy to help you. Mix_Master2k
I have been tryin to learn UVW unwrapping to. I have a model, and I am experienced in 2d digital art, but can't get the mapping. If you'd like a pic go here for my half Maul hilt model. I can get the actual cylinder wrap then fit then unwrap, but then I don't know what to do when I get all these weird vertices out of the grey box. Then do I do a screenshot and paste into photoshop or what? Thanks http://www.geocities.com/mix_master2k/half1.jpg -Mix Master
KBell
well, when i found a wierd vertici out of the grey box i just moved it to my liking, i dont think it will matter cause i did that and nothing went wrong. Ok what i do with the vertices is i seperate the Buttons (like an activater switch or a button) from the rest of the model and move it someplace safe on the screen. Then Shrink the Entire saber ( not including the seperated buttons) so that when you move the buttons within the grey box, they will fit nice and snug. Then Press Alt+prnt screen and open Photoshop and paste. You then use the Rectangular Marque tool and outline the grey box and click imaige, crop, then resize and make it something like 512X512 pixels, the size doesnt matter but just has to be a multible or 2 like 514 and 516. Then just paint over the diagram like a cool little coloring book. When your done just save the skin as "saber" AS A JPG, then open G-Max and use the material editor and click new, then click the little folder and click your skin and click apply and If all goes well, then your skin should show up all neat and tidy! If you have any more problems, just ask
