Are these guys Bothans?

Alright, leave all you know about the EU behind you and put yourself in 1983. In the scene where Mon Mothma is briefing the Rebels on the Death Star, you can see several of these aliens. Now, Mon Mothma's talking about how many Bothans died to bring them this information, and here we have these aliens in commando gear standing around, some of them looking like they've gotten themselves pretty beat up.

Are these guys Bothans? Did someone at Lucasfilm Licensing somewhere along the line give someone innacurate information about them and that led to the Bothans becoming what we see in the EU? I guess I should ask: do you think Lucas INTENDED them to be Bothans?

The first officially licensed Bothans(in terms of appearence) have been approved for the MMORPG, Star Wars Galaxies through a combined effort of Sony Online Entertainment and Lucasarts. Up until now, the Bothans had only a mention in the films, but no actual physical appearence. The SWG site has photos of the official Bothans here:

These are the way Bothans are supposed to look according to Lucasarts. This is the way they will be represented in SWG as a playable race.:D

Bothans have appeared in the EU before Star Wars Galaxies. For a while, they looked just like these shaggy humans with elvish ears (to see what I mean, look at the Expanded Guide to the Star Wars Galaxy, the (old) Essencial Guide to Characters and the Shadows of the Empire comic)... but then in the comic adaptations for Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy novels, the Bothans looked roughly like the ones in SWG (the looked a little more like dogs than horses), and that kind of Bothan also appeared on the cover of Visions of the Future. These Bothans also had the biggest fan following, and so, were replicated throughout the EU, replacing the Bothan's former design.

If there's one thing the EU is fairly good at, it's at faking continuity. Star Wars Galaxy is as much a part of the EU as the Thrawn comics, and SWGalaxy is trying to keep continuity with that, not so much with the movies. I've read the FAQ page of SWG and they rely very heavily on other EU sources.

The people who work at Lucasfilm licensing aren't psychics, they don't know George's vision for Star Wars and so they can give out information to authors and companies that is contradictory to Lucas' vision. The timeline of the Clone Wars, the drive of the Clone Wars, Jedi marrying and having children, just to name a few... these things were approved by Lucasfilm reps and now we see from the Prequels that they were wrong. My point is maybe Lucas intended for these prune-faced aliens to be Bothans, but somewhere along the line a Lucasfilm rep didn't get that and allowed the contradiction of Lucas' vision.
