Very new at mapping

hey, i really, really, really do suck at mapping...I tried a half-life map once, and I still cant forgive myself...but I've been having a lot of ideas recently, so could anybody tell me what programs (and where to get them) I need to make my own maps...that and any helpful hints at all...thank you

Your new map got good reviews though. I think massassi.net has got the most harsh critics.

I thought they were the harshest critics too, but they've been really nice about my new map, so I think it must have something to do with the money I 'donated' to them recently.
