If you paint your image ins greyscale, then use the variations tool in photoshop to gradually add tints of color until you reach your base color. This won't wash out you tones. I don't have PS at my disposal right now so I can't tell you exactly where it is. I don't believe it's on versions older then 5.5 either, so you'll have to look that one up in the help file.
