How do I set up multiplayer

I am a newbie to thie so bare with me.... I tried to start a dedicated server from teh multiplayer screen. I had it up and running, but it was not listed on the server screen, but was listed on teh local screen. How do i change this?? also, how do i make my muliplayer game show up on the list w/out running a dedicated server??? Sometimes I don't wanna run a dedicated server, but i do wanna host a multiplayer game for my friends, how to I get it to show up on tje list???

And I suggest that you use AllSeeingEye , for some mysterious reason the ingame list doesn't show all servers.
