Quartz
Ive got all the tools for the mapping (thanks to all who helped) im going through the tutotials and ive got to 101:4 and it tells me to put... "Create a Brush that is 512x512x384 (this will be easiest to do with your grid setting at 64). Set your grid setting to 8." how do i do that. it wasnt really explained in the previous tutorials Thanks
Eagle_e7
On your menu bar at the top of the screen with File,Edit,View e.t.c on it, you should see an option on it called Grid. Take a look in there and you should be able to set it to whatever you wish:)
Quartz
Thanks but also it said have a wall thickness of 8....??????? It looked like a square within a square, how do i do that????
Takeoffyouhoser
The best thing to do when using his tutorials are to disregard all his make a room this size and make it a thickness of this schtick. I think the guys is paranoid over compile times. try making your thickness a 12 and see what happens, lol
Quartz
How do you make the thickness itself? do you just put a box within a box, and make the inner one hollow?
Takeoffyouhoser
Well, I always assumed thickness was the " width" of a brush. If you make a brush 200 units long, and 20 units high, and 50 units wide, i always assumed the 50 units wide was the thickness? oh well.... if i am wrong, my map compiles in 21 seconds and has 1300 handmade brushes.... it causes no problems whatsoever in the game. I only thought thickness was used in the curves menu when making cylinders, though? Anyway Quartz, here are some easy tips to building process. When making walls and floors and roofs, make them as thin as possible. if you have your grid setting at 4, just make the flattest or thinnest brush you can. this helps speed up the compile time. There are times your going to build something that requires, *GASP*, a non thin brush. Just go for it and disregard all the thickness of this and that stuff. Always place caulk on all non-visible sides of brushes. I always build everything in caulk and then texture it. This helps stop sparklies where brushes meet. Finally, don't get paranoid over framerates and thicknesses and Frames per second or compile times. just build your level.
Tyler_Durden
Well i think he should get paranoid over at least framerates. My first map was very large, it took about 30-45 minutes to finish the whole level. Unfortunately it ran slow as hell and i couldn't do a damn thing to fix it because i didn't really understand the whole concept of level-making and framrate issues. It was only when i finished 3/4 of my third map that i realised that every door should have an area portal brush around it. Now in my mind area portals are just as important as caulk in terms of keeping the action smooth. So dude, if you're not placing area portals in your map and it runs like molasses, learn about area portals, and place em because it can make all the difference between a piece of crap and a rose. Quartz
Thanks for all of your help, but.... CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO MAKE THE WALLS THICK! i have learned a lot from this post one frame rates etc, but nobody has told me how to make the walls thick, i do want to follow the tutorial to learn all about it. Master Toke
Zoom in on your 2D view (the Delete key, I think). When you've zoomed all the way in, press the number 1 key (not the 1 on the number pad). You will see every possible grid unit. Make your walls 8 thick based on that.
