Silverhawk2000 Posted January 14, 2003 Share Posted January 14, 2003 Another newbie question. When creating objects in the editor can you have a Brush and a Patch Intersect? I Know that the editor documentation says not to overlap brushes (for example the faces of one cube intersecting another) But what about brushes and patches. I was looking at the duel_arena map and it seems like there are Patches that cut right into some Brushes. For example, a rectangular walkway connecting to a cylinder - the walkway would have to intersect the cylinder slightly to avoid the small gaps on either side) The documentation does not really explain very well what a Patch is. If Brushes are like Lego Blocks, then are Patches like sheets of paper (in terms of not having depth - untill you 'thicken' them)? Leslie Judge Posted January 14, 2003 Share Posted January 14, 2003 Yes, you can say that. In your case it's not a big problem if you make your walkway in that way (if I understand the layout). You can try to make the end of the walkway out of simple patch meshes (thickened ones ) if you don't want overlapping. It's not so easy but useful to learn. The problem with overlapping is that, if the two overlapping thing has one of their faces at the same place. For exapmle a circle like walkway connecting with other straight walkways. The tops will be at the same place where they will overlap and the two textures will fight for the place against each other. This is called Z fighting. You HAVE to avoid Z fighting. Disturbing. Suicide20 Posted January 14, 2003 Share Posted January 14, 2003 The short answer here is yes, they can intersect. "Thicken" a patch means to add more points to the patch. I guess thats the laymans terms for that. It doesn't change the shape, size or orintation of the patch, only the number of points... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Thicken makes another patch (similar to the original) at the distance of the given value and makes patch meshes (if it is selected and it is by default) between the two patch to build around the gap between them. So the result will look like if it was the same patch just more thick. It is also default that they become a func_group. The new patch is always created on the non textured side of the original.
