Modeling and skinning help

I'd like to learn how to do custom modeling and skinning. Could anyone direct me to the software and information I would need to learn how to do this?

Programs:

 

To skin: Any paint program i.e. Photoshop, Paint shop

 

To model weapons: Milkshape 3d, gmax

 

To model players: 3D Studio Max and other programs available in the jk2 editing tools such as carcass and assimilate.

Here this is the best skinning tutorial I've seen so far. I haven't figured out modeling yet but skinning is easy.
