What's the point of a .surf file?

Most .surf files that I come across just remove certain parts of a model, why do that when you can just put "clear" in the place of the skin texture file pathname in the .skin file like Ravensoft does with some of their skins.

I'm sure the .skin file can do more than that, I just don't see why people make a .skin file just for that purpose.

The point of this post is to find out whether or not using the .skin file to disable certain parts of a model does something that just using "clear" in the skin texture file pathname does not.

Why surf files ??

1. Because they allows you to turn on/off surfaces in MP

game without affecting SP game.

2. Because some models have some surfaces turned off

as default and ( as far as i know ) only way to turn them

on is with those SURF files

----------------------------------------------------------------------

My recommendation:

1. If you need to turn ON some surfaces then do it in

that SURF file.

2. If you don't need to turn ON any surfaces then don't

use SURF files at all.

3. If you need to turn OFF some surfaces then always

do that in the SKIN file (if you have SURF file then you

can turn surfaces off in that file but still do it also in

that SKIN file)
