Kurgan
I always thought of "hippies" being people who bought into the whole "counter culture" of the 1960's in America (mostly west coast left-liberal stuff). It had some positives to it (like supporting civil rights or peace verses war), but nowadays it usually either refers to the negatives (free love nonesense, recreational drug use, bad fashion sense, naive attitudes especially about communism, lack of responsibility, etc) or else somebody who just romanticizes the culture (ie: they like the clothes, music, etc of the era). It's the "drugged out dirty hippy" stereotype, which is sometimes true, sometimes not. I guess its like the "goth" subculture. You always hear people make fun of it, but once in awhile, you actually see or meet somebody who fits the bill perfectly and you aren't sure if you should find it funny or sad. I think (like the counter-culture of the 1960's) its a way for people to try to get attention and at the same time "distance" themselves from what they see as the dominant (stiffling) culture. The trouble is, when enough people do it, it ends up you're not being different anymore, and just being as much of a follower and conformist as everybody you despise. ; p
