Ug_Leh_sp4mm0r
Why does my 1.6ghz Athlon totally out perform my 2.2Ghz P4? both have Soyo Dragon mobo's Both have 128Mb GF4 ti4600 both have Via Chipsets same drivers - detonators - 4 in 1 etc OS = win 98se (i h8 XP ) AMD = 3Dmark2002 score 10100 P4 = 3Dmark2002 score 8945
Triband
If you only base this on 3D-Mark you're going the wrong way. Is this the same for ingame performance? I assume you have a AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (don't know all the steppings from the top of my head)? In most cases AMD outperforms Intel CPU's when on the same clockspeed. Right now I'm using a XP 2400+ that outperforms most Intel CPU's in the same range. AMD is faster if you only look at the clockspeeds, but Intel has higher clockspeeds for their newer CPU's. Ug_Leh_sp4mm0r
Thanks for replying nah... I use the 3Dmark as an Illustration and benchmark cos we iz gamerz - but my XP1900 AMD (u were close ) loads quicker - loads photoshop quicker - renders artwork quicker - and games better too . RAM btw is pc2700 - Nanya (mentioned as supported by mobo manufacturer) I wish I'd never bothered getting the P4 tbh wasted me money - I could have got the XP2700 CPU and still had cash left over. /me slaps meself with the wet end of Bill Gates
Triband
Can't you bring it back? I never bought a P4 due to AMD being cheaper and in most cases faster. Seems like a waste of money. The XP 2700+ basicly has the same performance as the top P4 models with Hyperthreading. Some apps the P4 wins, others the AMD. But since the P4 is twice as expensive as AMD it's an easy choice. Nanya is ok. Also have one stick of 512 MB's Nanya in my rig. The other 512 is Infenion. I'm not into overclocking, so no expensive brands for me. With 1024 MB's you can do a lot of nice tricks to load everything into RAM (Windows, games, apps). Still beats the crap out of harddisks. Also I never liked the P4 motherboards. For AMD you have better choices with more options. Sucks if you can't return it or pick something else.
Ug_Leh_sp4mm0r
LOL - I'll use it as an electronic doorstop.... I have asked the shop to take it back and they've agreed -- I buy way too much stuff of them and they know I'll buy more - so they are happy - I think I'll upgrade me proc instead + i saw harddrives with 8Mb cache on board by western digital w00t
Triband
Oh yeah baby! Those rock. I'm using a 80 Gig 8 MB cache Maxtor myself. ATA-133. Very fast indeed. Note that 8 MB cache is useally only noticable with ATA-133. Western Digital only has ATA-100 (not completely sure though ).
Andy867
AMD chips tend to be more real-time as opposed to Intel Pentium chips. So when running a 1.6 ghz against a P4, the best match is having a 2.53Ghz P4 run against it for terms of relative speed. Its said that although it may appear slower in terms of numbers, the AMD is relatively faster than the p4s since the bus is shorter, and the shorter the bus, the fast the data packets can be fired. So, just food for though on future chip purchases.
