Is monkey 1 ever going to be beaten!!!

Im probably one of the biggest monkey island fans ever i ve been playing the games since the first one came out on the amiga 500.

Although this might sound sad ive since the games came out:

Ive completed the first one: 21 times

second one: 7 times

third one: 7 times

fourth one: 2 times

Anyway over the years as the monkey island series has got bigger with an extra 3 games i dont think they are improving at all on the first one. I think lucas arts needs to go back and look over what they done with the first game and use a few of these ideas to make the 5th one better than the 2,3&4 games and if it is possible (which i dont reckon it is) make it better than the first.

Although i think the 2,3&4 are still far better than nearly 97% of the games out there on the market. (the only game i can think of that has been better than them 3 is Grim fandango) This 5th one needs to be better than 99.9% of the market at least, if not better than all the games on the market, including The secret of monkey island.

I think this new game needs to be harder, the puzzles more clever and the game needs to be longer. I think the story line needs to be to the standard of the 1st. If the lucas arts team could do this mabye monkey island 5 could be a big hit and mabye be as sucessfull as the final fantasy series possibly having over 10 games as well for the die hard fans.

I think if they still used the humorous pirate adventure game idea (monkey island isnt monkey island without that) but posibly use graphics a lot like final fantasy 10 or 11 so the game would look a hundred times better. Old characters should still be used but dont go over the top by using all of them just some of them and bring in new characters that go along with the theme of the game.

And mabye instead of having gybrush as your character they should do it so you make your own pirate up but still see gybrush while going through the game, you choose your pirates cloths, you decide whether he has a beard, peg leg, hook, parrot etc and instead of just the odd diferent types of cloths and items make hundreds of different types so everybodies pirate can look different. then u make up his background and do a pirate adventure like that in a monkey island world. If they done that idea mabye they could also make it a game that could be played online as everybodies character would be a bit different.

I think if they used this type of idea the first game could be easily beaten.

If anyone could get a message to lucas arts this could be a possibility. :D :D LOL:D :D

Thus making it more of an RPG or action game rather than what it is, an adventure game and a bloody good one at that. even if LA had the resources at the time to do what you want to SOMI, they would have still made a point n click game out of it. the graphics there game it a good tone and atmousphere which is hard to replicate and I really think they should stick more to that. And honestly, Guybrush is the star of the show, he's the reason we play the games. In the first two, he was funny, inept, and lovable whilst still not being the typical hero. He's been toned down sligghtly in the latter two, but is still as cute and lovable (I can't believe I said that about a dude). We can't replace him with a customizable do it yourself hero, that just wouldn't be right. And playing online, what the hell kind of adventure game is that?

Now of course, this is just my opinion, others might think differently, But I feel strongly that MI5 should be purely an adventure game and nothing else.

I think the story line needs to be to the standard of the 1st.

i think that would be extremely hard to do, not only because mi1 is an excellent game in terms of it's story and plot (as well as all of the other aspects of it), but also because it's the beginning of the series, and has a storyline that makes sense: "i wanna be a pirate". as the game progresses onward, you can't make it "i wanna be a pirate" again, but instead it becomes more of "the adventures of guybrush", and i think it's pretty obvious that the games have lost their adventurous nature over the years, because, to be completely honest, you can't get any better than "i wanna be a pirate", you can only make up things that happen to guybrush, and not him starting something new again. i think that if they were to make mi5 better or at least par with mi1, it'd have to be him doing something new, on a new adventure to accomplish something that is a goal of his (becoming a pirate), not circumstantial (get the ultimate insult and get rid of ozzy mandrill). and that's why they've been digressing in their excitement levels, but i still think that making a good story line like that is definitely possible.

oh, and by the way, welcome to lucasforums :)

Hey there LeChuck lives, as Mole said, willkommen, although some people may disagree with what you say, some people would rate MI2 or MI3 as the pinnacle of the series to look up to. When it comes to plots though, I think that the more sequels you get, the harder it is to be original and the easier it is to replace a lot of originality with back references.

Thnx for welcoming me das mole.

:)

How could people say that 2-3 are the pinnacle of the series. I admit the visuals, as in the way the game looks is probably best on monkey island 3 then any of the others in the series. although 4 was more up to date high tech sort of crap it does not quite work like the way that the looks of 3 has.

As for monkey two yes the story line wasnt bad and the puzzles were just as good as the first but when i first played MI2 it wasnt quite like playing MI1 for the first time.

I dont know what it is but The secret of monkey island has something about it that makes it 100 times better than the others to me but thats my personal opinion, and i do respect other peoples opinions on what they think is the best as really this is all about personal opinions, everyones different in what they like and dont about these game, there may be things i like in one of the games that u may not of vice versa. :)

My theory is that the first game you play is the standard by which you judge all the others... For instance, many will claim MI1 to be THE BEST MI game... I, for one, think MI2 is the pinnacle of the series, since I played MI2 before MI1... In fact, I judge all other games in any genre against MI2, which is my favorite game of all time... I personally wish computer games had stopped evolving after MI2, so all games could have similar graphics... so for instance, Indy and the Fate of Atlantis is also one of my favorite games, mostly because of the graphics which are really similar to MI2...

Anyways, I guess I'm just a grumpy old gamer, bitter because I can't handle the intensive 3D twists and turns and explosions of today's games... I'm old school and I'm proud!

acutally, i tihnk mi1 is really good and i could play it a bunch of times, but i think that it kinda gets old after a while. mi2, however, has a higher playability level...in fact, i never get tired of it. probably because you have so many options of what order to do things in. like in the map piece part, or you can go to whatever island you want first and stuff like that. i just hope that mi5 will be good, or at least better than mi4. but i'm sure that it'll be an excellent game because i think that they wouldn't want to end the whole mi series with some crappy game, and i think they'll do their best on this. because if i'm correct, which i'm probably not, didn't mi4 run out of time or something, which is why the game was kind of below mi standards or something like that? i dunno. hopefully they won't run out of time for mi5, because if they did, (i'm gonna state the obvious) that would suck.

(hey, i just broke 900 posts!!!)

I think Big whoop at the end of mi2 ruined it i know its meant to be funny but it was like a simon the sorcerer game, just the other way round.

In simon the sorcerer two i believe. at the begining simon is in his room as a normal person in the 90s when he suddenly goes into a portal back in time, with this game it worked.

But with mi2 going through the game through a time where the pirates lived and then ending up at a 20th centuary styled theme park didnt work, for me that is. after that one they then went and done it with mi3, they had the them park at the end again and they also had the kid selling cannons with lazer sights and stuff like that it was alright it was quite funny and still an enjoyable game but if they done it like MI1 and kept with the things from the past it would have been better. Anyway then we come to MI4 this ones not so bad with that sort of stuff, Aprt from the robots at the end.

I think they need to leave stupid things out that dont fit in with the time. A bit like the first one then the 5th one will be a hit. also they shouldnt rush it like they did the 4th.

I don't think anything could beat MI1. I think, though, in MI5 LucasArts should go back to the ye olde graphics and written not speech. I know this would make it less popular with the current generation of gamers but surely the other mi fans who've played all 4 would appreciate the coolness of it all! Mi1 is my dream, I want to live it! But with more skullduggery, fights, treasure, guy gets girl stuff, pillaging, plundering and hilarious comments! I am gonna live it!!! Moi hahahahaha......er....sorry :D

LeChuck lives, read a couple of the Ron Gilbert interviews, the 20th Century stuff has somwething to do with the secret of monkey island, although, we're never going to find out the true secret cause Ron cant make it, but, we can make up our own in our heads, anyway......

My favourite game has to be MI2, for the same reasons as other people, mainly because it was the first game I eveeeeeeer played, that and DotT, but MI beats that any day (great game though, but it just can't be put on the same level).

MI5 cant be better than the first two, it can be better than 4, but its just not possible for it to be better than the first 2, otherwise, why would we be here, we all think that MI1+2 are the best games ever made, so, whatever they give us for 5, we'll just say,

'Oh, it aint s good as 1+2, they've tried, but it just dont have the same quality'

The rest of the world might think that its the best game ever made, but we'll just turn it down, saying that it just aint Ron Gilberts story, WE AINT NEVER GONNA GET RON'S STORY.

Sure, they can make a damn good game, but as an MI we will all say that it just doesn't quite make it.

I think we have to accept that the 'magic' has long gone from the MI series. While technically the game may advance with each sequel, the overall games become less meaningful.

I agree with Lechuck, I too had an A500, and MI1 is undoubtedly the best of the series. It has the most atmosphere, and that magic spark that enchants you. MI1 doesn't feel like a game, no matter how many times you play it, it feels like a true adventure.

MI2 is probably technically (in terms of graphics and sound) the best game. MI3 might have had smoother graphics, but had nowhere near as much atmosphere. MI2 is in second place in my eyes, but I can see why some people would rate it higher, it loses some of MI1's magical feeling, but makes up for it graphically.

MI4 was fine as a game in its own right, but had 0% atmpshere, and 0% of that magic feeling when you played it. With MI1 + MI2 I could have stayed up all night playing them. With MI3 + MI4 I'd play them, but come tea time, I'd switch off and go and eat my tea.

I think we'll have to accept that there's probably never going to be MI sequels as good as MI1 and MI2......

Taken straight from deep inside my heart and soul. Every word of it. My love for MI1 is (nearly) unparalled. All has been said that should be said execpt...

I love that game.

Im just like you i think that when it comes to this game i thinkim the biggest fan, mainly because to me this game is special this is where most of my gaming came from.

The secret of monkey island was one of the 1st 4 computer games i ever played along with games like: Pong, Space invaders and a game called Cadaver. i played the other 3 and then the secret of monkey island, when i played this game it changed my whole view of the gaming industry which wasnt very big at the time, and made me like the point and click style adventure games, after i completed monkey island 1 about 6 times i knew it word for word almost, even the stupid little bits like when you meet the bloke in the troll costume.

This game rules and i hope every new computer that comes out the secret of monkey island has a new version that will run on it so we never loose this amazing game.

Since the secret of monkey island ive probably played over 7,000 different games over the years, and i still think this is the best game ever.

im a massive fan of MI. It's nearly always impossible to better an original as the characters and to a certain extent, the story is recycled in sequels. IMO though, Monkey Island 3 was as good as Monkey Island 1 in many ways. Monkey Island 2 had undoubtedly the best ending of the games so far and some seriously good jokes and puzzles as well. I think Lucasarts did an excellent job with MI 1, 2 and 3. I don't have a favourite of the 3, as I love so many bits from them all: The cheesy romance of MI1 the skeleton song of MI2 (head bones connected to the.....) and the cabana boy of MI3 (esp. slapping him with the wet towel).

MI4 is a great game, with some memorable bits (darts) but it doesn't square up to the others. I think MI5 will be an excellent game, but to answer your question, "lechuck lives", no I don't think MI1 will ever be beaten. Equaled, yes but never beaten. It's so special because it's the first game that brought us Gorbush Thrushweed (or whatever his name is);)
