In fact, if anything Guybrush is Elaine's weakness. She's strong, independent and resourceful, and clear headed, but Guybrush gets under her skin in a way that brings out her softer side. But you wouldn't know that to play EMI, in that game he behaves more like a puppy who is eager to do whatever to please her, and she's more than happy to utilize him for whatever errand best suits her purposes, which isn't how I see that relationship at ALL.

I took this as Guybrush was still in the the honeymoon stage, willing to do anything she asked. Frankly it felt right after getting married at the end of CMI - it seemed like he was still in disbelief that he was married and life hadn't gotten real yet (he also probably just got laid, which may have not have been a frequent occurrence before..)

My point is that I think he was meant to act and seem different that before, as they were just figuring out what it meant to be married. Now if it was a few games later and he was acting like that still then I think it would have been out of place...

To me it's not the lack of polish compared with Curse that became most striking, it's the lack of polish compared with Grim.

Anyway, yeah. I think I sort of agree. I don't hate that they changed Elaine's voice for EMI. I hate that they did it, then had an opportunity to give her a more prominent role, but ultimately reduced that to the role of a nagging quest-giver for the majority of the game. So I now always associate that voice with an overbearing, unlikeable version of Elaine.

Well I don't think I'll change any minds here, but I do want to voice my disagreement to both of the points above. I thought there was quite a bit of polish, even compared to Curse and Grim, and I really liked the EMI Elaine in a lot of ways (as well as the interactions/chemistry between the two of them) - I never found her unlikeable.

The more I think about it the more I think that Elaine really hasn't had a decent outing in the series except for Tales.

Yea... I actually wasn't a huge fan of her role in Tales. Maybe she just isn't that interesting of a character and I prefer when she isn't as front and centre. For some reason I wasn't a big fan of her character model either...

That being said, demone's long and loving post above discussing Tales was pretty convincing, and even if I'm not the biggest fan of Elaine as a character, I'll say she was much more developed than in any other game. I did like her (and her voice) a lot in EMI though.

Oh, right. It's that scene that I completely missed, like, my first five runs through TSoMI because I always solved the idol task last. 🥇  🥈⚔️  🥉👩‍🦰

Yea, I actually only 'discovered' that scene (relatively) recently! I always solved the idol task last.

I hope this topic isn't drowned out by delivery ghost memes. 😅

Of course Noah will exaggerate a bit and who would blame him, but I'm confident that he wouldn't draw this much attention to the beginning part if it was just a bad segue from LeChuck's Revenge to Return to Monkey Island. We actually have a rather clear idea what those first ten minutes are about: We're starting off at the Carnival of the Damned, Ron always wanted to, and we're resolving a situation that's been left unresolved for over 30 years. But they can't just render a solution, they also immediately have to hook us onto a new story arc. The first and the latter are difficult, but both at the same time especially so.

I'm so excited to see what they have cooked up!

I watched Noah's interview last night and I couldn't believe how excited I got! Just hearing him talk about the first few minutes... my goodness, I can't wait!

MI aside, I want to have a Lucas/Lucas-esque marathon at some point to celebrate ReMI's release. The DoubleFine remasters. Hit The Road (plus the Skunkape remasters). The other Lucas games. Thimbleweed Park (which I've only played on release and not with the patches). And Broken Age, which I have yet to play.

Seems like I'm not the only one that's gotten an itch to go back play/replay a bunch of the LA, and LA-inspired games!

After replaying the MI series, ended up playing both TWP and Labyrinth for the first time. I still have a pretty long list of games that I would like to get through, and all of these I'm ashamed to admit I haven't played before:

    DOTT Remaster

    Full Throttle Remaster

    Grim Remaster

Broken Age (started playing when it first came out, but ran out of free time and never finished)

    Psychonauts 2

Telltale's Sam and Max (all 3 seasons, plus the Snunkape remasters - started Season 1 when it was first released, but didn't make it very far)

    The Cave

And of course RTMI will become top priority when it's finally released. 😃

I also would love to go back to some of the others again... really want to replay Fate of Atlantis... but I really don't have the spare time like I used to 😑

The LucasArts logo was bad, but so was the rectangular big-L-big-M LucasFilm Games logo. Only the pre-1988 curved logo looked good.

Blasphemy! They all look great, and I absolutely loved what they did with the gold guy in different games. And that's a fact not an opinion. A fact that is completely unbiased and not clouded by a childhood-induced wave of nostalgia.

How can you not love this?!?!

I do want to replay Tales at some point, but I find the compromises and issues really sad, and am holding out hope for an eventual remaster from SkunkApe.

Which compromises and issues are you referring to?

  8. Soon as RTMI was announced I started playing through all of them again... finished a few weeks back. It was really fun, and as much as I have favourites, I really enjoyed the whole series. It is my favourite series of all time after all.

I ended up playing the Special Editions, as I had only played MI1SE once and had never finished the MI2SE. I basically played with the updated graphics/sound/voice, but did spend a lot of time switching back and forth between the SEs and the originals. Even though there are a few little details about them that bothered me, I really liked the special editions, and am grateful that they came out (and introduced new players to the series). That being said, next time through I would like to go back to the originals, and may end up doing that in the near future if RTMI doesn't come out for a while...

As someone who has struggled to enjoy TWP, I'm intrigued to know if all that extra work added to your enjoyment. And if so, could you surmise some of your major learnings so I don't have to follow in your footsteps? :)

Well, I actually just played the game first... really got into it, and then felt this wave of regret for not getting in on the backing and anticipation.

The development blog was really cool. I learned a lot about game design, budgeting and puzzle dependency charts. Useful, everyday knowledge for sure... great applicability to my day job! 🤣

So when is the next big event it could get announced at?

Soo... I obviously would love for it to come out sooner, but this whole time I've been thinking that they are aiming for a November release date.

Let me explain. After playing TWP for the first time a few weeks back I really got into it, and was especially kicking myself for not backing it when it first came out (for some reason I completely missed hearing about it... it wasn't like I consciously chose not to back it). Anyways, I spent HOURS reading the original kickstarter page and postings, as well as EVERY ONE of the blog posts that Ron made on the TWP website. I even started listening to all the podcasts.. but after about 8 hours in I realized that listening to them all was going to be an undertaking that would just take too much of my time...

Anyways... what I do remember was Ron talking about release dates a lot. He kept saying that you need to release by November because you don't want to release around the time of the AAA games at Christmas. In the end they didn't end up getting it out by November, but rather pushed it back into the next year by a few months. So my immediate thoughts on hearing that RTMI was coming out this year were that it would be out by November, and probably not much before...

Now to change all that with my hugely controversial opinion...

...I like Herman Toothrot the most in EMI.

    Agreed!!!

Frankly, he wasn't very interesting in MI1 and MI2.

I'm both confused and saddened. I played all three paths just last year and I loved every second of it! The voice acting isn't the best, but the story and setting delivered like no other! I absolutely adore it, but maybe that's the unpopular opinion?

I'm replaying CMI at the moment, but it doesn't sweep me away like FOA did last year.

I loved FOA, so I'm on your side. I played it a bit late though (~2000), so the voice acting did seem a little dated. That being said, for being one of the first 'talkies' I still thought it was pretty impressive and the voices grew on me. Couldn't imagine turning them off.

Oh, and anyone complaining about the graphics needs to get their eyesight checked. I know of a good optometrist if you need one.

Oh I forgot about the Mysts of Time! That went on way too long, and the tank controls would change direction when on a new screen and send you into the wrong direction too quickly and then have to start over.

Now that I look back more on it, There are a lot of EMI puzzles that could be in the running for “Worst non-Gabriel Knight 3 puzzle in an Adventure game”.

I'm actually kinda surprised -  I really enjoyed the Mysts of Time and thought it was incredibly clever. One of my favourite puzzles from EMI in fact.

Oh, and I did hear about it being based off of some other puzzle in some other game... but regardless, every time I replay Escape I really enjoy that part.

I'll be seeing it tomorrow morning, after I take my 3 months old boy to his first baby-swimming lesson!

Life always comes first, but I'm really excited nonetheless!

Yea, it's almost 11:00 PM here, so I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow sometime to catch up on everything...

    Man, I really hope there's a trailer!

  15. Those reaction videos are priceless. I literally got teary eyed myself watching them! 🥲

I really wish I had my reaction on video... all I remember is seeing something about an announcement on April 1st and completely dismissing it. I didn't even consider if it could be possibly true, and probably kept on scrolling...

Once I saw the trailer, I can't describe it as anything put pure, childish joy. The music... it just sent shivers up my spine!

Heck, it must have made an impression, as I even explained it my wife (who's not into computer games) that my all time favourite computer game series was coming back, and she was amused by my childish excited 😅

I then proceeded to get back into playing games after not really touching them in 14 years...

I actually thought me liking the Dig was the unpopular opinion. It's far from my favourite LucasArts game, but I did enjoy my playthroughs immensely when I was a kid.

I should boot it up again to see how it holds up.

You know, The Dig was the last LA adventure I played, mainly because everyone online seemed to have mixed feelings about it. Yet going into it with low expectations I ended up really enjoying it. I thought it looked and sounded beautiful, and I really liked how the story was different than all the other adventures. Made me wish I had played it much earlier.

I guess that's a lesson I keep learning - expectations can really change the way you experience something. Guess that's why I'm trying to keep them low for RtMI and get pleasantly surprised. I rather that than be thoroughly disappointed.

  17. I just took a break from reading a research paper for my master's program, and I have to say that the posts I just read by both Kroms and Vainamoinen were truly well-written, insightful, and thought-provoking literary masterpieces, not to mention much more interesting than reading about educational theory.

  18. Well, I probably have a lot connected to EFMI:

    - I did enjoy the Toothrot-Marley-revelation, as I thought it was a cool connection between the first two and 4 th games.

    - I'm glad they made the transition to 3D in Escape and had no issues whatsoever with the controls/interface

    - I loved the whole last act (Monkey Island plus ending... including Monkey Kombat!) and felt it was much more satisfying and epic than the short and abrupt ending of CMI

But, I'm only putting those as BillyCheers mentioned the first one. The first thing that actually came to mind, is I actually love the LAs Star Wars games, especially Tie Fighter and Dark Forces, and have played some of them more than some of the adventure games. I just wish their success hadn't killed adventure games... (I know that's a overly simplified version of historic events)

Oh, and I really don't see why people like the second MI special edition much more than the first. For me there were too many little details they didn't get correct with MI2, starting with the missing opening credit sequence (Don't get me wrong, I'm still grateful for the SEs in the first place). Oh, and I didn't mind Guybrush's hair from the first SE.

This is fun - great topic starter! 😁

I feel like ranking the MI games (or at least, my bottom 3) has to be done with the other Lucasarts adventures to provide greater context on my feelings over their overall quality. Otherwise, you have Tales and Escape right next to each other, and I don't really think they're comparable; to me, Tales is leagues better, but something has to be second last and it's hard for me to seperate the first 3 games. So here goes, my official ranking of all the Lucasarts adventures, plus Tales, plus the Telltale Sam & Max seasons (cause why not?)

    1. CMI

    2. MI2

    3. MI1

    4. Grim Fandango
    5. DOTT
    6. Full Throttle

    7. TMI
    8. Fate of Atlantis
    9. Sam & Max: TDP
    10. Sam & Max: BTAS

    11. Sam & Max HTR
    12. Sam & Max STW
    13. EMI
    14. The Dig
    15. Last Crusade
    16. Maniac Mansion
    17. Zak McKracken
    18. Loom

Interesting... I have always grouped the MI games together as one, but throwing the other LA adventures into the mix does make it a bit more interesting. I'd have to think about it some more to see how my bigger list falls...

  20. Yup. I felt it was timely/appropriate to revive a 2 year old post. Especially since I saw EMI needed some love 😅

Anyways, just after Escape was released (around ~2000) my list was

    1. MI2 and EMI (Tied)

    2. Curse

    3. MI1

Replaying them again recently, my opinion of Escape stayed about the same but my opinion of MI2 changed a little (just a little) for the worse as I found that it was even 'darker' than I remembered, and I'm still not sure what I think of the ending. The gameplay, music and map pieces chapter are amazing though. My new list became

    1. EMI

    2. MI2

    3. Curse

    4. MI1

And I've only played TMI twice now. Once recently, and once around when it came out, and even though it's been like 12 years I feel like I still haven't sat with it enough to definitively say where I'd place it compared to the rest (I know, I know... I need to play it a few more times). If I had to though, I would say

    1. EMI

    2. MI2

    3. Curse

    4. MI1 and TMI (Tied)

Don't get me wrong - I love them all. Every one of them. Like Dom said on twitter once, rating them is like saying which one of your kids you like best. Difficult to do, and when you compare them to the neighbours kids, you can't help but love them more 🤣

Oh, and btw, if it makes any difference I played them all in order, pretty much within a year or two of them each coming out. Escape wasn't my first introduction to the series in case you were wondering...
