  1. The fate of Monkey Island

    Last days of Monkey Island

    Romance on monkey iskand

    The Chronicles of Monkey Island

    Invaders of Monkey Island

The forgotten treasure of Monkey Island

P.s i almost wrote escape from Monkey island 😅

  2. So do you think its called 'Return to monkey island' because of the famous Mi5 april fools joke years back?

Because if so, that's awesome that it got announced on April fools with the same name 🤣

It gives another layer to Ron's clever unapril fools.

If not then that's a huge coincidence.

Also, I found this in the "About" section of Grumpy Gamer. Could this be a reason why Tim Shafer isn't involved with RtMI? (Next to having his own studio to run and make his own games.)

Aw man... i just realised that The Cave is never going to come to ps4/ps5 now because of the Microsoft ownership.

I hope Ron and Tim are still on okay terms.

That's sad, i'm surprised there was never a deal made before development started so that Ron could have some ownership of the ip.

  4. Just read Ron's new article. It's an interesting read and i just feel bad for Ron, Dave and his team.

Its pretty obvious this is a game they are all passionate about.

Its a miracle that Ron has been given 100% freedom to make the Monkey Island game he wants. That's insane and so exciting!!!

Although I had expectations for a pixel game, i now realise the thing i really wanted most was Ron Gilbert's vision. I don't want Ron feeling he has to compromise the game to fit what we have in our heads.

He is right about letting him make the game he wants to make. I'm excited to see a unfiltered Ronzo 3rd Monkey Island game that isn't afraid to be its a own thing.

I think that would have worried me more than anything.

I'm playing through Thimbleweed at the moment, and so far it's fine for what it is, but it's also so self-consciously a throwback that it has trouble being anything else. You can't go five minutes before hitting on some joke or reference which is basically 'See? Remember old adventure games?' and that's... fine, but I would hate for a Monkey Island game to be so backward looking.

Remember at the time, especially the first two games were on the cutting edge of what adventure games could be. SoMI revolutionised Adventure puzzle design overnight and set a new standard for comedy in games. MI2 only a year later achieved a similar goal but with the scope expanded massively in all directions. Hand drawn art, dynamic music, enough game that it had to be shipped on Amiga on ELEVEN disks.

These were forward looking games, and I think they've correctly realised that the same should be true of the new one. I think it would have been a sort of sad return to Monkey Island if it was just a reflection upon past glories. To me, going with a distinctive new art style is a statement, and it says: 'Yes, we're carrying on where MI2 left off, but we're not pretending that nothing has happened in games since then' and I'm hugely encouraged by this shift in thinking.

To be honest i never had that with Thimbleweed Park. I remember the original games making injokes and references to other games all the time so for me that just felt like Ron's sense of humour or a lucasarts tradition.

I do agree with Ron wanting to go forward with new ideas.

Yeah, I've been refreshing Mojo and Twitter every day since the announcement to see if any new info is out. Idk a whole lot about marketing but I would think that the game must be close to coming out for them to announce it when they did, so I would

think they'd want to strike while the iron is hot to make sure people don't forget about the game by the time it comes out, though at the same time I guess they have to build people's expectations and hype. I'm with you though, I'm dying to see Guybrush and some gameplay, along with a release date so I can plan my Monkey marathon 😁

Haha oh me too. I've been checking and refreshing everyday.

I keep wanting to start a monkey island game but i dont want to start 1 and 2 too early.

I was debating playing 3 and 4 first if there is a long wait. But worried i'll start and find out the game comes out in a month or two haha.

Here's what'll happen. (Probably. I dunno, I'm predicting here) You'll see it, and you'll instinctively be weirded out by it because it's going to be in a different style to how Guybrush has ever looked, which is always odd (same with CMI, y'know).

Then you'll see more and more of it in motion and you'll realise that it's pretty well done for what it is, and in the end you'll probably either end up liking it or just making peace with it.

I think the big take away people will have when they see it all in motion is that this is it's own style, it's not going to be like the previous games, or like the special editions. Some people will vibe with it, others won't, but it'll be really clear they were GOING for something (my main criticism of SoMI SE is that I really wasn't sure WHAT it was going for with the style.)

Yeah my expectations keep adjusting already.

Originally i was disappointed that the game wasn't getting the Thimbleweed Park treatment (being made to feel like a lost Lucasarts game found on a floppy disk.)

I think because Thimbleweed Park happened it did give people this expectation that Ron would use that retro visual for bringing back a retro classic. Thimbleweed park had the original background artist for Monkey island back to do the backgrounds, why would you not get him back for a new monkey island game?

But i respect that he's already done it and wants to do something different.

If not pixels then my 2nd dream visuals for the game would be Steve Purcell's visual design in this artwork below. However, i know that it would be unrealistic and never expected that to happen.

The style they've gone for though is interesting. I think alot of it looks wonderful, especially the backgrounds. My worry is that the character designs are unpredictable. Some character designs look great while others im not sure about.

But anyway i'm sure i'll adjust or love what they do, just happy this game exists at all. Thank you Ron and Dave. I'm grateful for all your hard work.

  8. The rational part me of me is thrilled about the monkey island game and grateful it comes out very soon. Thank you Ron Gilbert and team.

The irrational part of me is absolutely losing my mind waiting for more info on this game.

Show us Guybrush already!!! I'm so nervous about what he looks like.

What if Grumpygamer closing down due to backlash means they will delay the reveal... 😔😔😔

I just want to see the game in motion. Give us some gameplay please. 😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬

  9. Sometimes I wondered if Ron Gilbert wanted to make a sequel and settled on making a spiritual successor.

Maybe I'm just desperate for a 3rd game but it did at times feel like i was playing a 3rd Maniac Mansion.

I also have a theory that every Maniac Mansion game was going to change genres but still be connected to a mansion.

    MM - horror

    DOTT - sci fi

    Thimbleweed Park - Dectective mystery

I also think a 3rd maniac mansion game would have a different title like DOTT.

    So... Maniac Mansion: Thimbleweed Park?

Well, Tim Schafer did say that it was Ron who came up with the idea of time travel in the original concept for Day of the Tentacle so I guess we can't rule out anything at this point.

Knowing that was Ron idea makes me love Ron even more.

Dott is my fav point and click game.

Do we know if Ron or anyone representing Terrible Toybox will be at PAX East tomorrow? I know Devolver are there but they don't seem to be indicating that Monkey Island is one of the things they're showing. I REALLY hope we get something though, that would be the perfect time to get a lot of eyes on the game. Otherwise the next big convention is Summer Game Fest which I believe is all online and we don't even know if the game will be out before or after that. I'm just starved for info now, even though it's only been 2 weeks since the announcement 😂

I really hope so, i need to what Guybrush looks like 😬😬😬

  12. Isn't it weird to think we now have a Ron Gilbert trilogy and a Curse style trilogy.

Wait... so Curse of monkey island is now the 4th game in the story by canon 😂 that is so strange but interesting after years of it being the 3rd game.

So weird after years of debate about what is canon, Ron is now settling the debate and marrying it all together. 😁

Also anyone notice we have 'Return' and 'Revenge' in the titles just like Stars Wars. 😃

I think that's probably what will happen. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if a Curse remaster was already in the works. Once Skunkape are done with Sam & Max, they'll need something new to work on, and Tales would be perfect if they're not already working on a new Sam & Max season. I could even see them doing a second season of Tales if the new Telltale pass on it (they seem to still be solely focused on post-Walking Dead style games). I would also love to see a remaster of Escape, even if it's just for completion's sake. It'd be great if the Special Editions of 1&2 got a second pass to fix some of the unfinished art (MI1 melee forest especially) and weird removals of things (opening credits in MI2, vertical scrolling, etc), but I think that part might be wishful thinking. Maybe if they got ported to the Switch I could see them tweaking it a bit and why not patch the PC version while you're at it?  It'd even be worth it just to update MI1 to have voice in classic mode and be able to mix and match the new music with the old graphics (especially in MI2 which not even the Ultimate Talkie Edition can do); basically just adding the features that were put into Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle.

As for other Lucasarts stuff? Give Brian Moriarty his Loom trilogy, and remaster the first one with fully voiced, uncut dialog. Craig Derrick has also wanted to get a remaster of Maniac Mansion greenlit for ages now, so I can see that being a big priority.

Love  new Sam Max season and I think we need a sequel to Tales to wrap up the cliffhanger.

Why haven't we had a Maniac Mansion remake/remaster yet? It is so needed!

  14. Not to risk going off topic but with Disney letting Ron make another Monkey island... do you think this is a one off deal?

Or do you think we could see other Lucasarts games get sequels from other developers?

Maniac Mansion 3 has been a dream game of mine all my life... maybe Terrible Toybox could make that next... or Maybe Double fine could make another Grim Fandango etc.... maybe get Skunkape to finish Freelance Police.

I just think of 2009 when Lucasarts let Telltale Games make a new Monkey Island... it was exciting time but never led to more games sadly... just a couple of remakes...

What do you think? Should i not get my hopes up?

  15. The fact that they aren't showing Guybrush yet gets me nervous like they are worried about a backlash.

But going by the characters in the screenshot its clear they are going for a high def version of the mi2 sprites. The dotted eyes and blocky faces.

I'm preparing myself for a Guybrush with dotted eyes and angular head etc. I just hope he doesn't have the long neck and palm tree back hair like in the original sketch.

No offence to the artist, they are very talented. I know its just a sketch but i hope the final look is a bit more detailed.

Also can we finally have a Guybrush with darker hair and half grown facial hair? I really want something different from the curse of monkey island look.
