Right, right, and I am a known complainer on the character art, etc. etc.Β But I am enjoying the story experience. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was where I first saw that type of scene (even though I caught Mary Tyler Moore on Nick at Nite, I never saw the finale).

    Β

And here's a fun thing: when I left the apartment my roomates and I shared at the end of college, we very intentionally turned off our lights that way. Because we both knew the reference in terms of Fresh Prince.

    Β

I can't recall if I ever saw the ending of Fresh Prince but 'lights out' has long been associated with death / the end. Think Shakespeare's 'Out brief candle'. Trope it may be, but only because it's such a well understood metaphor.

    Β

I cried buckets when it was our turn.

My favorite TV show is Lost, so I'm no stranger to ambiguity or not getting all my questions answered. It's a series I still defend because it managed to feel satisfying without revealing every single mystery. It's that old adage that if you "wow" them at the end, you can forgive any of the flaws that came before.Β

    Β

IΒ hatedΒ the ending to Lost. In fact, the entire 6th series. Even now, thinking about it is a complete bummer. I feel for you if you're experiencing similar disappointment with ReMI.

    Β

ReMI's ending was about as close to perfect as it's possible to get, for me. Heartfelt, touching, sort of creepy and weird, with a dash of humour in the mix. I was sobbing. It's a shame it didn't work for you - but at least you got to enjoy Lost!

Funny you mention this; my girlfriend (who also greatly disliked the ending) and I were discussing why we were so bothered, and I said "Maybe it's because I have a literature degree. Not in the sense that 'I know what I'm talking about and everyone else's opinion is wrong!', but rather because I have spent SO much time being literally graded on how well I'm able to extract meaning from someone else's work."

All of my upper division courses were basically "okay we just read something, let's collectively come up with 10 theories that all work as to what really happened" and essentially you can either go in the camp of "well, this is what's actually on the page, soooo that's just it" or "but this was written in Germany in 1947 soΒ clearlyΒ this is all about the Holocaust" and another kid says "well I think it's about dinosaurs and unicorns" and all of these interpretations hold equal weight because everything's made up and the points don't matter.

To not be bored I would just come up with the most outlandish theories possible and be maximally convincing to sell my garbage idea, only to get an A from the professor. Inside I'm screaming "no, you idiot! I'm just bullshitting you! You're rewarding me for grasping at actually nothing!"

That's why I never rush straight to a game's Steam forum after I've seen the interpretive ending to find out what wild theories people have about what they just saw. It just puts me back in school in the worst way possibleΒ πŸ˜‚

    Β

So is it a theme park? Is it all real? Being told it doesn't matter and I get to choose what I believe just makes me check out. I'm just completely soured on that entire process and I think as a result I've never been able to enjoy those kinds of endings ever since.

    Β

That's what art is, though. Creating meaning where there is none. That's whatΒ lifeΒ is. You missed out if you bullshitted all the way through. You've gotta embrace it.

So uhhh... wait, the old pirate leaders only show up in this first act if you turn writers cut on? Hope I didn't miss too much by having it turned off...

    Β

I've got writer's cut off too (still at Part 4) but that's what second playthroughs are for. They wouldn't have cut it if they didn't think it improved the experience first time round.

To my mind the whole point is that there is no official 'really happened'. You can decide that it all basically happened just as Guybrush said but with a few imaginitive wrinkles thrown in by his son, or you can decide it sort of happened buy Guybrush exaggerated and changed a lot of it, or that it sort of happened but Boybrush imagines a lot of the details and changes a lot of stuff, or that none of it happened at all and it's just fun stories Guybrush is making up for his kid which he's then taking and running with. It's true freedom that, that I think any attempt at peeling back the curtain any further would probably hurt.

    Β

As an additional layer of complexity there's a third narrator, the one who narrates the 'Meanwhile...' scenes in LeChuck's ship and his fortress, which Guybrush cannot possibly have knowledge of.

    Β

The more I think about the Boybrush Solution, the more I love it. On one level it ties everything up - and on another it adds yet more ambiguity to everything we've seen so far. And to take us all by surprise even though we've had 30 years to think about it - that's just genius.

    An important reminder:

    Β

    Β

Ron Gilbert: "The problem with the 'Secret' of Monkey Island... is that it's built up such a mystique, that when I finally reveal it, you're going to go, 'That was dumb'Β :)"

    Β

    Β

    Β

Chances of having a disappointing next few weeks... moderate to high ;) Your choice, of course, if that's what you wish!Β πŸ‘

    Β

(Actually I was disappointed when I first played Monkey Island 2 -- I just loved the first game SO much. It took me a long while to fully accept it for what it was and enjoy it. Funny how I only just remembered that.)

    Β

Same here. I was initally disappointed with all the sequels apart from Tales, I think because I expected them to be exactly the same as the game that preceded them, for some reason(?!)

    Β

Anyway, this time round I have learned my lesson and have no expectations whatsoever, except that it's going to be the greatest thing that has ever happened in the whole wide world.

  7. Love the Rex interview. It never even occurred to me that that character might be female but it's true, it's obvious when you really look.

    Β

This interview has convinced me to take the game as slowly as I possibly can. No rushing. I want to takeΒ everythingΒ in.

  8. From the Nintendo UK site:

    Β

Content will usually be available atΒ 14:00 GMT (15:00 CET)Β on the day of release.

    • Please note: some third-party titles may not be not available until 17:00 GMT (18:00 CET) on the game’s release date.

So my guess is 9am PT / 5pm BST. Which seriously sucks, because in the UK we're all off work that day and everything's going to be shut.

I was thinking... the elevator that takes you to Melee in Monkey 2... all my life I thought of it as a simple easter egg, when in reality it is something that happens. I wonder if since Return to Monkey Island starts at the amusement park and then (I guess) we go to Melee, if the way to get there is the elevator and in fact we have some kind of explanation as to why in the tunnels on the island Dinky there is an elevator that takes you to Melee.

    Β

I've got it! The elevator is the Master's Tardis!

    Β

Kidding aside, I'd quite like it if some more overt sci-fi themes crop up with regard to the 'secret'. I'm well up for an interdimensional, spacio-temporal portal flittering in and out of existence around the Caribbean. But I suspect Ron will choose to be more subtle and ambiguous than that.
