Realism, it can be really fun

Recommended Posts

Some idea I'd like in a mod.

Mainly I want the weapons, a bit more realistic, or rather more like the movies.

Some ideas I've got for this include:

-Faster bolts, in the movies bolt velocity is always dependant on the range to the target, it's almost as if some invisible beam measured the distance to any object in the path of the blasters barrel and bolt automatically travels at such a speed that the time to traverse it is roughly 2-3 frames irregardless of range. If someone could implement something like this it would be really cool and very movie like.

-Brighter bolts, the bolts aren't very hot looking in the game, if it was possible to make them glow brightly but not horribly so, it'd be really nice, you can see the effect I am reffering to in AOTC, take Jango's weapons for instance.

-More punch to the weapons, I find the feel of the weapons lacking, hence I almost only play with the saber, the blaster weapons should come with firepower settings, take the DL-44 for example in ANH, Solo firing it on a high setting and just look at the walls exploding as if an RPG had hit.

-I also think that with a blaster impact should be a small explosion, it's size depending on what firepower setting say if you hit a stormie with a fullpower blast, the impact would toss him like the E-web does and an explosion around the size of his torso would occur at the impact site.

That'd look really nifty, bolt comes a flying and hits the stormie and he's tossed away as an explosion occurs on his chest, the stormie should fly away, but the explosion should remain where it impacted.

-Concussive damages from high powered blaster shots would also be a realistic addition, and cool, don't forget the coolness :D

These suggestions would apply to all blaster type weapons.

One could change the setting with the +/- keys on the keypad, I think 6 or so possible settings for every weapon is about right, though E-11's should be toned down since at realistic full power they make the AT-ST rockets look lacking :p

-Overheating, thats a big issue with blasters, the more you up the firepower setting the more waste heat is generated and you can overheat the weapons, I think this is a very important aspect of blaster realism, I am thinking something similar to the plasma rifle in Halo.

With a fullpower shot you should only be allowed like 1-2 shot and the gun has to cool down, it'd also draw more ammo the more you increase the firepower, it's a trade-off, lots of bolts everywhere, or a few heavy hitters that'll leave you with a gun that needs to cool off.

These alterations would bring in a whole load of realism into the game and they would make blasters in particular much more dangerous, I dunno about you, but I find realism really funny.

I'd love to see other additions you might have that would further bring the game closer to the movies and also realism wise.

I have no modding skills, thats why I am posting it here, hoping maybe someone will do a realism mod, and maybe the people at Raven will incorporate some of these suggestions in possible future SW games.

Yeah I understand that very nicely indeed.

Why are you claiming that realism and gameplay balance could not go together?

I've seen many a realistic and balanced games, true the type of game I am looking at is alot more like the military simulators like Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and other games using realism as a major factor.

So you would be correct in saying that this would definitly not make for a balanced game if your expecting a shooter, however I am thinking along the lines of a spec-ops game, thats the kinda stuff that Jedi are for anyway.

Eh, it'd probably require a new game from top to bottom given the extensive rewriting required to balance everything out again, but it'd be fantastic if someone took up the concept of a Jedi spec-ops game, playing on realism and stealth and such.

and it'd probably get real dull, real quick. i've known people who've played splinter cell and MGS and got fed up with them after a few hours cos it's so boring re-playing a mission ad infinitum because you trip an alarm or some guard sees you...

hell even the more 'arcadey' military sims of delta force land warrior and black hawk down can get really boring if you have to keep replaying the same bits over and over because you keep getting detected or killed...
