Some historical things...

In KOTOR, the Saber Staff (Sorry for calling it that, former JA player:D), has a long handle... But that is strange, for the long Saber Staff wasn't invented untill 4000 years later!

Here's a picture from KOTOR: shot0021.jpg

And here's a link to the info site where I found this info: http://www.thelightsaber.com/history2.htm

You'll find Maul when you open the site:D!

You should mod so that you have a blade similar to Exar Kuns, but I'll take that in the mod forum... (Exar Kun can be found a little more down on the site.)

Interesting.....

The saberstaff(s) were around in the pre KOTOR era, but Exar Kuns specifically did not have a long hilt. Im an EU freak and I didnt even notice that, it was enough for me that Exar Kun had the original saberstaff(see below on that same page you've linked to for Exar Kuns saber !)

also - check this out for pic and info of that specific comic :

http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/profile.php?sku=93-628

Please note though, as far as I can gather Exar Kun and Darth Maul seem to be the only two in the SW universe to be described as using a saberstaff..... (although I have not read the Jedi vs Sith comics, which are 1000 years before epIV)

Indeed, none of the jedi in AOTC used them, although some did use the duals sabers, including anakin for about 10 secs before dooku fries him !!!

Let's mod it right! If you are to use doublesided saber (Not Saberstaff, thats Darth Mauls saber! I came up with this because I realised that Exar Kun doesn't use his weapon as a staff. Darth Maul do tough...), it should be Exar Kuns style. Uh... It got a little strange there but I'm to tired to fix that...:D:rolleyes::D:rolleyes::D

On Starwars.com the saberstaff is actually re3ferred to as a "Sith Lightsaber" and in the description for it in the game it says it attracts those who are reckless and prone to fall to the dark side.

True, Exar Kuns has a shorter hilt but that could just be his personal style. In the Jedi versus Sith comics, I have not seen anyone else use a lightstaff. one character Githany (A sith woman) uses a lightwhip, now that would be cool to have. But going back to the point, in the novel Shadowhunter we find out Darth maul made his lightstaff in honour of Exar Kun. I like to assume that the differing hilt lengths refer to different fighting styles is all.

the only historical difference between exar kun's lightstaff, and darth maul's lightstaff is that maul's staff DID consist of two separate saber so that he could use a single balde if the weapon became damaged.

the above is a link to a page in the unofficial star wars encyclopedia with darth maul's entry.

DA INFO:

The thing is that Mauls saber is longer, so he can fight different. He used the small design that Exar Kun used but disliked it. He rebuilt it, longer and with two handles merged instead of just one with two side. That was the Saberstaff. It wasn't used at all by Siths before him (Exept in KotOR, but that's is what we are talking about!), but some Siths used it after his death.

– Saberstaff is long.

– Doublebladed Saber is short as an ordinary saber.

– Lord Exar Kun invented the idea.

– Darth Maul made it better.

i think what we are discussing here is merely caused from mistaken perceptions. but first let us take note that the weapon is a lightstaff. not a saber staff. it is a staff of light as a lightsaber is a saber of light.

i have read from many sources that exar kun is the figure most readily associated with the lightstaff. but nowhere did i read that he invented it. just because he was the first notable historical figure to use one, in no way implies he invented it.

i think you are trying to draw too many concrete facts out of a history that is vague at best. nowhere does it say exar kun invented the lightstaff. it just states that they are rare. and he was the first notable figure to use one.

so to me that would imply that others had used them before and that others continued to use them after. and given the rule that each lightsaber hilt is as unique as it's user, it would be difficult to jump all the way to the conclusion you are trying to reach.

nothing would logically dictate that what you are saying would be the case. exar kun is not noted as being the ineventor of this weapon, just a notable user. in which case the form he used was probably not the first. therefore it would be even harder to say that it was the only existing form until darth maul.

maul DID NOT make the first lightstaff. exar kun was known for using one long before maul used one. the weapon exar kun used once falling to the dark side at the hands of a sith ghost was called a lightstaff. and he was the first user of one of these weapons to be noted historically. not necessarily the first user. but we know for sure maul wasn't the first to use a light staff.

what difference does the hilt construction really make? so what if exar's lightstaff had a shorter hilt? what point does this make other than that particular person, designed his hilt that particular way. as many different hilts as there are in the SW universe i don't really think it's much of a stretch to suppose that there could have been a longer hilt for the lightstaff at this point in history. some people, even some shown in your lightsaber history guides, had longer hilts for the normal lightsaber. hilt size and design are merely a reflection of their user.

oh and if you read the history link thoroughly for the short maul saber you'll see that the author says this(click on the more on this lightsaber link under the picture and caption):

The history on this lightsaber is an embellishment of my own. The original concept of it came from a picture that was posted on StarWars.com. It featured a rack of stunt lightsabers and in the midst of the props was a shortened Maul lightsaber (shown on the right). This was the first incarnation of the lightsaber and later was elongated for easier wielding.

so basically he's saying "i made this up on my own. it's not fact. i thought it was a good idea, but i have no idea if this was intended to be a part of the SW Universe history or not."

Another 2 relevant factors in this:

...perhaps the fact that maul combined two separate saber assemblies, would be to allow him to continue to use it if one happenned to get sliced, as did in Ep 1....this would give him an advantage in a duel....

Also, from a practical point of view, for Ray park using the saber prop - it having a longer hilt would make it easier to use and twirl two-handed. Plus, when the sabercolor is added in later if the hilt was too small mauls hand would just seem to close to the blade all the time....which would be annoying....

uhhm, yeah. that WAS EXACTLY the reason given as to why maul used two separate assemblies. so if the staff was broken it could be used as a single saber.

But the issue at hand here is not why maul did what he did. the person is saying maul invented the lightstaff and thus nothing resembling his lightstaff could have existed until that point.

but this is not the case as the weapon exar kun used was referred to as a lightstaff, and not only that but he was not attributed with inventing it. he is merely noted as being the best known for using one. so they may have been being used for thousands of years before he used one for all we know. and just because his hilt was shorter than mauls doesn't mean that there were not longer hilts in existence. whether or not they were two separate lightsabers is not the only factor going into the size of the hilt.
