Ronald Reagan dies at 93

Recommended Posts

Reagan was the 2nd best President of the United States.

He revived the spirit and moral of America, won the Cold War, and repaired a horrible economy.

It is a sad day for America. A great person--a great American and a great President has died.

At least his family is out of the misery and trouble of Alzheimers and him remember NOTHING.

Let us put Reagan on Mount Rushmore.

Hats off to Ronald Reagan as he rises to Heaven, the eternal paradise

I am a strong Conservative Republican. Reagan was a great man.

Did you know that in the 1984 election, Reagan carried 49 States excluding Walter Mondale's state & DC.

Ronald Reagan, 1911-2004. Actor, gevernor, president.

Ronald Reagan wasn't what you would call an intellectual genius. Ronald Reagan didn't have that imposing of a figure. Yet this great man would become one of the most remarkable people ever to step foot on this planet.

From his first marriage to actress Jane Wyman, he had two children, Maureen and Michael. Unfortinately Maureen passed away in 2001. In 1952 he married Nancy Davis, who was also an actress, and they had two children, Patricia Ann and Ronald Prescott.

As president of the Screen Actors Guild, Reagan became embroiled in disputes over the issue of Communism in the film industry and his political views shifted from liberal to conservative. He toured the country as a television host, becoming a spokesman for conservatism. In 1966 he was elected Governor of California by a margin of a million votes and he was re-elected in 1970.

The year was 1980. The United States appeared to be in decline. The assasination of Kennedy, Vietnam, Watergate, Iran Hostages, crummy economy and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan caused the people of this great country to look at their government as a failed experiment and feared the good days were over. Then, he came.

Winning the Republican nomination for presidency in 1980 Reagan ran a very successful campaign for president. He won in a very large victory over incumbent Jimmy Carter.

Reagan became president with some firm goals in mind. Smaller government, lower taxes and a strong defense. In his inaugeraul speech Reagan said "Government is not the answer. Government is the problem". and reffered the Soviet Union as the "evil emapire". A few months later he was nearly killed by assasins. He kept his good humor up even when he went into the emergency room by saying to the doctors "I hope you guys are Republicans".

In my opinion, Reagan's greatest accomplishment was the economy. The economy was very sluggish until 1982 when his approval rating went down to 41%. Then the economy turned around, first growing then shooting up! The answer was tax breaks and less wasteful welfare programs. Reaganomics propelled the economy to amazing heights for the next 6 years.

Obviously, Ronald Reagan is best known for ending the Cold War. He increased defense spending in order to stay above the Soviet Union. the Soviet Union, no longer the #1 military power, immediately began its decline. It's economic failure exposed, communism began to decline rapidly. In 1985 Reagan met with Gorbacheiv and worked out the first arms deal. Visiting Berlin Reagan said these powerful words that, in my opinion, turned the entire Cold War around. "Mr. Gorbachiev, tear down this wall!".

That wall did come down along with the communist bloc of Europe. The Cold War was over and Capitalism and Democracy had defeated communism and socialism.

The Reagan administration did have its dark hours. Reagan gave billions to the contra rebels rebelling against Nicaragua. Though the Nicaraguen communist government was oppressive so were the contras. This lead to the Iran-COntra scandel. The Reagan administration was scarred by this. Despite all this Ronald Reagan left the white house with the largest approval rating of any other leaving president.

Ronald Reagan had to leave the public spectrum in 1990 because of his disease however he will always remain known as one of the greatest men who ever lived and the true conservative. I hope to be half the man he was. Whether you agree with him or not he still should be remembered as a great president who lead us through one of the toughest times in our history.
