The Seeker Posted July 18, 2004 Share Posted July 18, 2004 Well, after using my geforce 4 Ti 4400 for a year or two, the onboard heatsink fan started screaming at me. So, I bought a Thermaltake Crystal Orb to replace it. Got it installed okay, but when I turn on my computer, lo and behold, the fan doesn't come on. When I took the old fan off, it was plugged into a two pin connector, where this new one is a three pin connector. On my vid card, there is both a two and three pin socket, so I just plugged the new fan into the three pin socket on the card. But, like I said, it doesn't work. So, any ideas on what I am doing wrong here? I really don't want to pay Best Buy $20 to plug this stupid thing in for me. Thanks. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You can see in the pics that the PNY fan is plugged into a two pin port, but the new fan I bought is a three pin connector. My card has a three pin connector, but the fan isn't working. manoman81 Posted July 18, 2004 Share Posted July 18, 2004 I don't mean to insult you or call you a n00b with this question but did you get the right fan? Or is there another one that you could get? I know that the instruction books that come with ATI cards have some sort of schematic (sp?) in it. Double check yours to see if that port is for something else. Also check to see if you have to if the card needs more power. Might be another little port that you need to connect to the motherboard as well. I'll try to find something that shows what I mean. The instructions on the website said: Connect the 3 pin connector to the fan_header located on your motherboard. But, I couldn't see anything that would let me connect to my mobo. The fan came with an adapter that plugs into my three pin connector and makes it a two wire socket style plug that has four connection sockets but only two wires. The only thing that I saw it would plug into was a loose port on wires that seem to lead to my power source. I didn't know what it would do, so I didn't plug it in. I am just learning the ins and outs of computer repair, which is why I am always asking here. But, about being the right one, I talked to the guy at best buy, and he told me to get the ThermalTake Blue Orb as a replacement. I tried to track it down, but it isn't made anymore. The fan I got is the successor to the Blue Orb, called the Crystal Orb. Supposedly it's better, and works really well, so I got it. Anyways, if all else fails, I just bear down and take it to Best Buy and have them charge me 10 - 20 bucks to plug in my fan. Uh, Knight, How come you always have some sort of a computer problem? I don't know. This system I got just consistently has something going on with it. Also, I didn't extend my tech support warranty with compaq when I should have, so the only help I can get is either from Best Buy, where I have to take it in and get charged too much, or from here, where I can usually get help of some kind. It is an awesome rig, but when something goes wrong, several things usually do at the same time. For instance, I found out that my vid card fan was crapping out on me, because my case and mobo fans had already died. I had those two fixed, and was able to hear my card fan screaming.
